The Lakers have spent three games making life difficult for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and still have no answers for Oklahoma City. Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 21.0 points in the series after averaging 31.1 in the regular season, yet the Thunder are up 3-0 because the rest of the roster keeps turning every decent Lakers defensive possession into a losing trade.
The problem has become bigger than Shai
Chet Holmgren is averaging 21.3 points, 10 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Ajay Mitchell is averaging 20.7 points. Oklahoma City also keeps getting usable offense from Cason Wallace, Jared McCain and Isaiah Hartenstein.
That is the real series. The Lakers can tilt coverage toward the MVP and still watch another creator, screener or bench shooter punish the next decision.
Los Angeles cannot survive the second half
Oklahoma City has outscored the Lakers 189-135 in the second half through three games. That is where the depth gap keeps showing up. JJ Redick changes rotations, tries new answers and still ends up watching a fresher team win the possession war after halftime.
The Lakers also have the injury context working against them. Luka Doncic remains out with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, while Jalen Williams is still sidelined for Oklahoma City. Even with that missing star on the Thunder side, the matchup still looks lopsided because OKC has more playable counters.
This is a roster lesson as much as a series lead
Redick called Oklahoma City “an incredible basketball team” and praised the depth of its rotation. That was not coach-speak after a bad loss. It was the clearest description of why the Lakers have been buried without needing a huge scoring series from Gilgeous-Alexander.
Oklahoma City is turning this matchup into a test of how many real contributors a contender can put on the floor. Right now the Thunder are answering that question on almost every possession.
