Georges St. Pierre believes Khamzat Chimaev “is a better fighter than Sean Strickland” but thinks latter can beat the former again

Georges St. Pierre is a former UFC middleweight champion in his own right, and his thoughts on the recent Khamzat Chimaev versus Sean Strickland title clash at UFC 328 were something that GSP recently touched on. The former two-division UFC titleholder spoke about this to Mike Bohn during an interview with MMA Junkie.

Khamzat Chimaev dropped his middleweight crown to former champ Sean Strickland by way of a split decision at UFC 328 on May 9th. GSP mentioned being surprised by how the bout played out, quipping about how incredible and amazing it is to see the body of work Strickland has been putting together in these big upsets capturing UFC hardware.

After discussing how visibly fatigued ‘Borz’ looked and indicating he was excited to see if an immediate rematch or a light heavyweight move might be next for Chimaev, St. Pierre said [via MMA Junkie],

“Nobody’s invincible. It’s not the best fighter who wins the fight, it’s the fighter who fights the best, the night of the fight. If you don’t believe me, look at any other sport. … I believe that Khamzat is a better fighter than Sean Strickland. But that night, Sean beat him. Sean can do it again next time. That’s the thing. Being a champion, the number one quality of a champion is to be good when it counts, when it matters. It’s very hard.”

Khamzat Chimaev books next contest vs. ex-Conor McGregor teammate

Khamzat Chimaev is looking to keep busy and not stay on the sidelines for too long, and will be taking on a former opponent of Logan Paul in the coming weeks. Chimaev will put on the singlet and looks to get back in the win column, albeit in another combat sport, after dropping his MMA title. Chimaev will wrestle Dillon Danis, and this debut effort for the former in the shoot professional wrestling outfit has been building for a few weeks now

The signing of Chimaev was initially announced at the promotion’s RAF 8 card in April. Chimaev will look to follow up on the similar success that his cornerman from last weekend’s UFC headliner Arman Tsarukyan has had in RAF competition, as the top UFC lightweight contender has become a big star for Real American Freestyle. Danis has donned the RAF singlet before but lost via tech fall to former multi-time UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington at RAF 7.
