This edition (May 13, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three quick recaps from today’s posts: the Oilers’ coaching drama looks messy after the Bruce Cassidy situation, and Kris Knoblauch’s job suddenly feels shaky. The Maple Leafs ripped the Band-Aid off and fired Craig Berube as new GM John Chayka reshuffles the bench. And the Canadiens’ Alex Newhook is suddenly the playoff hero everyone’s buzzing about.
Oilers’ Cassidy Move Awkward — Knoblauch’s Seat Getting Hotter
The Oilers asking Vegas to speak with Bruce Cassidy while Kris Knoblauch is still the head coach was leaked, later denied, and now everyone’s eyeing Edmonton. Analyst Jeff O’Neill called the move “classless” and messy. If you want to chase another coach, just make the tough call and cleanly move on instead of dangling the rumour while your current coach is still in place.
Knoblauch’s record is good. He has two Finals appearances and solid overall numbers. But the writing’s on the wall, and it feels like he’s not coming back next year. With Cassidy off the table for now, GM Stan Bowman must pivot and find a Plan B. Either way, the Oilers need to stop doing this public-between-the-lines stuff and make a decision so everyone can move forward.

Berube Out — Leafs Hit the Reset Button
The big news of the day is the shakeup in Toronto. Craig Berube’s out after GM John Chayka and the new regime decided to part ways. Chayka called it a “fresh start” and praised Berube personally, but management clearly wanted a clean slate after a miserable season that left the Leafs out of the playoffs.
There’s chatter about whether Auston Matthews’ input mattered and who’s next (Cassidy’s name is already in the mix), but nothing’s nailed down yet. Berube had two years left at $4.5M a year, so the Maple Leafs will be paying unless he lands elsewhere. Expect a lot of hot takes and quick rumours while they scramble to pick the next voice behind the bench.

Newhook’s on Fire — Canadiens’ Secret Weapon
The Canadiens’ Alex Newhook is cooking. He has six playoff goals and five in the last three games, which has turned him into Montreal’s scariest guy on the ice right now. This power forward is doing his thing when it matters most. He just cracked the Canadiens’ top 100 in playoff goals, and he’s a real story in this run.
Beyond the highlights, this changes the Canadiens’ blueprint. Newhook’s $2.9M cap hit looks like robbery if he keeps this up, and locking him up this summer should be the top priority. He gives Montreal a legit clutch scorer they haven’t had in ages, and if he keeps rolling, the team’s identity and offseason plans are going to shift around him.
