Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs Will Meet Soon

In the newest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast on Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman told Kyle Bukauskas that the reason the meeting with Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs hasn’t happened yet is over-scheduling.

Kyle Bukauskas: “How about Toronto and any kind of timeline on the new regime there, meeting with the captain, Auston Matthews, and just seeing where he is at as they embark on which certainly need to be an interesting off season.”

NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews

Elliotte Friedman: “I have heard that is simply a scheduling issue that just everybody has to be able to find time to get together. I know it’s Toronto. It’s Matthews. It’s a big story. I get it. There’s all with the whole podcast industry right now is being fueled by when are they going to meet, and why haven’t they met yet?

I’ve simply heard it’s a scheduling thing, and nobody should overreact to it. But I do think they’ve met like the number of the players who live in the Toronto area. Like I think they’ve met with (John) Tavares, lives in Toronto. (Chris) Tanev lives in Toronto. (William) Nylander has been more visible in the offseason than he was in the regular season. And he’s around here. I think they’ve met with, like all those guys. Eventually they’ll get to Matthews. It’s just, I heard it’s a scheduling thing.”

NHLRumors.com Note: When new Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka met with the media on Wednesday to discuss the firing of coach Craig Berube, he had conversations with Matthews to get a lay of the land.

“We’ve had conversations. I think it was important for me to get a good lay of the land in terms of internal workings and what we had in place here… I wanted to make sure that we had all the knowledge we could possibly have, so when we sit down, we can have the best discussion.”

According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, that meeting will take place in the next couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see what happens in Toronto moving forward.

No Panic in Ottawa with Brady Tkachuk

NHL Rumors: Where Are the Brady Tkachuk Trade Rumors Coming From?

Kyle Bukauskas: “Okay, how about the Ottawa Senators and their captain, Brady Tkachuk?”

Elliotte Friedman: “Yeah. So they met Monday, and it was a little bit unusual, because, as everybody knows now, that when they lost to Carolina, Brady Tkachuk left right after that game. For the best reason, his wife, Emma, gave birth to a beautiful little baby, and he’d been away taking care of that. Which is obviously the first priority.

So this was kind of Brady Tkachuk’s exit meeting. And I think everybody is trying to respect everybody else’s privacy here, but the one thing I did hear was that there was nothing said in that meeting that induced mass panic, or should give the Ottawa fans a reason to worry. That’s all I heard.

NHL Rumors: Several Team Would Like To Trade For Brady Tkachuk

I heard that there wasn’t like, I think people really wanted to know when that meeting was happening, to find out if there was going to be any issue. And I just heard like it wasn’t bad or anything like that, and there was nothing to overreact to.”

NHLRumors.com Note: Everyone is looking to will a Brady Tkachuk trade into existence. We might have to take both the Senators and Tkachuk at their word that neither has expressed interest in change. Yes, there are signs or annoyances for the player, but this could just be a larger narrative playing out in the media.
