It’s like no one learns, huh. Once again we saw some total dorks engage in bigtime douchebaggery at a pro bike race.
The Giro d’Italia was rocked by a reckless roadside incident Wednesday after two spectators allegedly tried to shove riders as the peloton raced toward Naples at high speed.
The moronic incident
The chaotic moment unfolded with around 50 km left in stage 6, as the bunch swept through a roundabout between Brusciano and Marigliano. TV footage showed two young men stepping toward the riders with outstretched arms while another filmed the scene on a phone.
Afonso Eulálio appeared to fend one of them off, while Gianmarco Garofoli was also smacked by the “fans” as the peloton squeezed through the corner at speed.
Italian police later identified and charged two 19-year-olds from San Vitaliano with endangering public safety during a sporting event. Authorities reportedly used television images to quickly locate the pair, who were also handed bans tied to sporting events.
Everyone else in Italy just shook their damn teste
Riders and organizers condemned the stunt afterward. Alberto Bettiol said the situation could easily have caused a massive crash. Meanwhile the Giro’s social media reminded fans there is “a limit not to be crossed” when watching roadside action. (The silly part is every year organizers of every race, or riders, put out PSAs saying, “Please do not be dumb this year.” And yet, every year, there is another example of said dumbness.
Apart from the fact that this is just so stupid, reckless and inexcusable, don’t people know that everything is on camera, and yes, you’re gonna get popped eventually. We’ve seen it so many times lately in men’s and women’s cycling. Whether it’s road or ‘cross, it just keeps happening. Boggles the mind. The beauty of pro cycling is that you get to be up close and personal with your heroes.
But that doesn’t mean you get to put riders and everyone around them at risk.
Anyway, if you want to feel your BP spike, check out below.
Respect the riders. Respect the race. Respect the #GirodItalia
🫶 Fans, Tifosi. We love you on the roadside. We love your enthusiasm, we love that you cheer on the riders, we love that you dress like flamingos.
❌ But there’s a line not to cross. Don’t be like this guy. pic.twitter.com/iO7wJNkUOa
