BCCI is likely to announce the rules today

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might release its retention rules on Thursday. Though the rules were expected to be announced on late August, the board delayed its decision as mega auctions loom this year and the franchises are not too keen on change the balance within their squads.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated last month that the board is open to recommendations from franchise owners for “further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations”.

The franchises were allowed retaining maximum four players before the mega auctions in 2022. The 2025 season marks end of another 3-year cycle, hence it is time for another mega auction. Though, most franchises are deciding on retaining five or more players in order to keep the balance of the squads they have made.

One thing to be noted is that not all teams are to be in agreement for this case. Those teams that got good results in the past wanted BCCI to allow more than three or dour retentions, just as was the case in 2022 auctions.

They have made hefty investments in some young players and have helped them grow, but there is a high chance of all them going to waste in case of only three retentions.

(This is just a report and nothing is confirmed yet)
