Marty Jannetty’s heartbreaking health battle has taken another devastating turn, as former wrestler Eddie Mansfield revealed that Jannetty ultimately had his foot amputated after years of complications tied to sepsis.
While speaking on Monte and the Pharaoh, former pro wrestler Eddy Mansfield revealed that Jannetty had his foot amputated after years of serious ankle and sepsis-related health problems. Mansfield opened up by saying Jannetty is one of his closest friends and confirmed the amputation while addressing wrestling fans directly.
“Well, you know, to all you wrestling fans out there—and Monty as well—one of my dearest friends ever on the face of this earth, and a great wrestler, had his foot amputated, and his name is Marty Jannetty.”
Mansfield then turned his attention to WWE, questioning why the company did not step in to help Jannetty during such a serious medical crisis. Mansfield said the situation upset him because he believes wrestlers who helped companies make money should be cared for when their health breaks down.
“But where in the hell was WWE to help Marty Jannetty? He made them millions of dollars, and you can’t help him when he’s in the biggest need of his life, fighting for his life? These guys in WWE can get all these pay raises and all this other stuff, screw the wrestling fans out of a bunch of money for tickets—but you can’t take care of the guys who make you the money.”
He also explained how close he is to Jannetty, saying their friendship goes back four decades. Mansfield then said Jannetty had been fighting for his life and claimed his ankle problems traced back to injuries suffered during his wrestling career.
“Marty Jannetty is like a brother to me. Me and him go back 40 years. That’s a long time, brother. And I love him like a brother. Always have. “He’d been fighting for his life. His problem has always been his ankles. And his ankles were screwed up in a WWE wrestling ring, making them a lot of money.”
He recalled seeing Jannetty struggle badly with pain, even during later wrestling appearances. Mansfield also remembered producing Jannetty during the XWF days and said Jannetty needed special shoes just to get into the ring.
“I can remember Marty when he could hardly walk. His ankles bothered him so bad. The pain pills really didn’t do anything for him. He was in so much pain. When I produced him at the XWF, he had to wear special shoes to get in the damn ring. I felt so bad even asking him to work because he was in such pain during those matches. But he didn’t complain one time. He went and did the job as a true professional and a star would do.”
Mansfield then argued that WWE and Shawn Michaels should have made sure Jannetty received top medical care when his problems first began.
“WWE and Shawn Michaels should have stepped in and made sure he went to the best when it all started. Give him the best medical attention and the best doctors that money could buy. That wasn’t done. How come WWE, with all their money, couldn’t take care of the guy that made them millions of dollars?”
Jannetty had previously revealed that doctors urged him to consider amputation after sepsis spread into his ankle. At the time, he said he could not bring himself to go through with it, even though the infection had flared up again.
Bottom line: Marty Jannetty’s years-long battle with sepsis has resulted in a foot amputation, according to longtime friend Eddie Mansfield, who also criticized WWE for not doing more to help the wrestling legend medically over the years.
