KMC Go Chain Wax – Cycling News | Bike Reviews

The KMC Go Chain Wax is chain-maker KMC’s first foray into the lube market, and it’s a good one. Not incredible, but good. You’ll need a surgically-clean drivetrain before the initial application and it’s slow to cure, but its performance and durability are very good – if less impressive than some hybrids with a sophisticated oil component.

It’s biodegradable, free from PFAS (synthetic forever chemicals such as PTFEs and other water repellent coatings) and harsh solvents.

KMC says to top up after a maximum of 250km (155 miles) on the road, or 100km (60 miles) off it. My first rides along lanes carpeted in agricultural slurry and waterlogged sections were perfect for testing these claims, and I was pleasantly surprised. Even in these conditions – which have consumed some waxes in 70 miles – I got a respectable 200 miles.

What is the best way to lubricate a bike chain? Keep your drivetrain happy and efficient with this selection of top bike chain lubes

On the other hand, I’ve used sophisticated wax/oil blends that have clung on for 400 miles, so while it’s good it’s not the best.

A mix of road, gravel and moderately gloopy bridle path saw 125 miles, but I’d got to the faint tinkling by this point and in retrospect, should’ve topped up at 100. To my surprise there wasn’t any tell-tale taint on the chain, suggesting the film barrier is genuinely effective.

We tested the 150ml bottle at £18, but the £55 500ml bottle makes it a little cheaper. Not that cheap: Weldtite Wax Lube is half the price at £8.99 for 100ml, for instance, and very similar in every way. Still, KMC is not the most expensive either. CeramicSpeed’s wax-based UFO Drip is £21.99 for 100ml, for example.

While I wouldn’t describe Go Wax as remarkable it’s a very clean, competent, three-season blend that offers decent performance across the board. You can get quicker curing and longer lasting, but overall Go Wax is a good, solid option.

Competent and clean running wax lube for three seasons’ riding contexts and more durable than some when things turn damp. However, long curing times and the need for surgically clean drivetrains, first time round may not suit everyone.
