On May 16, at The Eco-Power Stadium, Doncaster, Dave Allen vs Filip Hrgovic headlines a Queensberry Promotions fight card, live on DAZN. The main event will take place in the heavyweight division.

Dave Allen vs Filip Hrgovic

After an entertaining undercard, it was time for Dave Allen vs Filip Hrgovic in the heavyweight division. As Allen made his way to the ring to the familiar sounds of My Way, the decibels from the crowd went up, and it was time for Allen to face Hrgovic for the vacant IBF Intercontinental and WBA International titles.

Hrgovic (20-1, 15 KOs) had a strong opening round, controlling the distance, finding a regular home for the right hand. He also landed some hurtful-looking body shots towards the end of the round. Allen (25-9-2, 20 KOs) tried to get his jab going, but it was a good opening three minutes for the Croatian.

Hrgovic continued to control the distance during the second round, with Allen struggling to close the distance and avoid the right hand. During the third round, the Croatian continued to dominate and work behind his jab. Hrgovic increased the tempo and couldn’t miss. Allen wasn’t throwing back, and his corner had seen enough and pulled their man out, awarding Hrgovic the TKO win, and crowning him the new IBF Intercontinental and WBA International champion.

A complete mismatch from start to finish!

Michael Gomez Jr vs Lee McGregor

Next up on the Dave Allen vs Filip Hrgovic undercard was Michael Gomez Jr (23-2, 8 KOs) vs Lee McGregor (16-3-1, 11 KOs) for the vacant WBA international lightweight title.

Gomez Jr walked into the ring and headbutted McGregor before the fight had even started, which wouldn’t have been on many bingo cards. McGregor started the fight impressively, whipping in various heavy-looking body shots. The speed from McGregor was impressive in the first round, but Gomez Jr did settle towards the end of the opening round, landing some well-placed body shots and uppercuts of his own.

The power of Gomez Jr began to tell early in the second round, when some well-placed uppercuts had McGregor holding on. The Edinburgh native enjoyed a strong third round, outworking Gomez and landing more well-placed body shots. McGregor looked comfortable on the back foot during the fourth round, but the Manchester fighter showed power again, landing the big right uppercut once again. 

The power difference was evident at the end of the fourth, with Gomez knocking McGregor down, who did well to get to his feet and end the round on the front foot. McGregor continued to show immense bravery and impressive accuracy, but the power enabled Gomez Jr to land the more telling punches. The pressure and power from Gomez Jr proved to be too much, with Billy Nelson throwing in the towel to save McGregor from further punishment. McGregor showed his class in moments, but he just didn’t have the power to affect Gomez Jr, who won by sixth-round TKO.

Louie O’Doherty vs Ahmed Hatim

Next up was Louie O’Doherty (12-0, 3 KOs) vs Ahmed Hatim (12-1, 3 KOs) for the British and vacant Commonwealth lightweight titles.

O’Doherty had the best of the opening round, walking Hatim down and getting his shots off. Hatim landed a couple of nice right hands, but O’Doherty will be the happier after the first three minutes. Hatim enjoyed a better second round, landing the more eye-catching punches.

Over the next couple of rounds, both fighters had their moments. O’Doherty definitely did more in the last two rounds, but Hatim did more than have his moments. As the fight entered the second half, O’Doherty continued to set the pace, with Hatim having his moments, but it just didn’t feel like enough.

The current British champion enjoyed a strong seventh round, dictating the pace and winning the exchanges. It felt like O’Doherty was in control at that point. At the end of the tenth round, Hatim looked weary, walking back to his corner. The work rate of O’Doherty began to pay dividends, especially the body shots. The superior tempo and straight shots from O’Doherty saw him win by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 119-109, and 118-110 x2, all in favour of the British and Commonwealth champion Louie O’Doherty.

Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev vs Alexis Torres

In the first fight on the Dave Allen vs Filip Hrgovic undercard, it was the decorated amateur Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev (2-0, 1 KO) vs Alexis Torres (13-16-2, 7 KOs) in the welterweight division.

It was an impressive opening round from the highly regarded Muydinkhujaev. He quickly showcased his slick footwork and heavy jab. His ability to change the levels was already evident in the first three minutes.

His footwork was almost effortless in the first two rounds, as he controlled the distance effectively. Muydinkhujaev continued to box sharply, picking his punches with speed and ease. The mercurial Uzbek continued to vary his attacks and put his punches together impressively, resulting in a 60-54 win. The welterweights around the world should watch out for Muydinkhujaev.
