Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder, has confirmed his participation in the second Test against India at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium, despite initial concerns about a finger injury. Ahead of the match, Shakib made a significant announcement—his retirement from Test cricket.
While the Kanpur Test will go ahead as planned, Shakib’s final Test match will take place during Bangladesh’s upcoming series against South Africa in Mirpur, marking the end of an illustrious Test career. If political instability in Bangladesh disrupts the South Africa series, Shakib has stated that the Kanpur Test could be his final appearance.
At 37, Shakib has played 70 Tests for Bangladesh, amassing 4,600 runs at an average of 38.33, with a highest score of 217. As a bowler, he has taken 242 wickets at 31.85, including two 10-wicket hauls. His all-round contributions have cemented his status as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers. Shakib debuted in Test cricket against India in 2007, and his remarkable career has seen him become the sixth player in history to score 4,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Test cricket.
Shakib’s retirement signals the end of an era for Bangladesh cricket. Known for his leadership and match-winning performances, his absence will create a significant void in the Test squad. However, he has confirmed his participation in limited-overs formats until the 2025 Champions Trophy, after which he will retire from ODI cricket as well. His statements read:
“I have expressed my desire to play my last Test in Mirpur, if that won’t happen, the second Test against India would be my last. Going back to Bangladesh is not a concern, but leaving Bangladesh once I go there is dangerous,”
“It feels fitting to conclude my Test career in front of my home fans. Bangladesh cricket has given me so much, and I want to give my last in this format at home,”
Bangladesh will face India in three T20Is after the Kanpur Test, before embarking on a tour of the West Indies. The upcoming South Africa series will be an emotional farewell for fans, as they bid goodbye to one of the nation’s greatest cricketing legends.
