Eddie Howe declares ‘It is a big summer for us, a huge summer for the football club’

Eddie Howe saw his Newcastle United side go two up in the first twenty minutes against West Ham United, Nick Woltemade and William Osula with the goals.

A very open match saw play switch quickly from end to end.

William Osula adding his second and Newcastle’s third with 25 minutes left on the clock, only for the Hammers to get a goal of their own which was no consolation.

Eddie Howe speaking after the 3-1 win to Sky Sports: “It wasn’t the perfect game from us but it was very good in phases, especially in the first half I thought we were excellent with the ball and really creative. We have seen big progression in the last weeks, a much better performance. It has always been our hallmark, we want to see big energy from the players and taking the game to the opposition, and we want to have the quality. We haven’t always been able to put that together in the Premier League, hence our position, but we are showing signs that we are finding our form.”

Newcastle United having now picked up seven points in their last three matches and Fulham away to end the season next Sunday.

William Osula has now scored five goals in his last six Premier League matches.

The young Danish striker a surprise package late in the season.

Eddie Howe on William Osula: “He is really growing and improving all the time. There were some really good moments from him today, obviously the goals. To lead the line for Newcastle isn’t an easy thing, there is a lot of pressure, expectation and responsibility that comes with that role. I’m really pleased with his progression but I still feel he has got a lot to come which is really exciting.”

It was also a day for farewells of course…

Eddie Howe on Kieran Trippier and his impact at the club: “You never quite know how any transfer will go when you bring a player in. I was pretty sure he would help us because I had worked with him before and I knew what we were getting. The consistency he has shown. The quality he has shown. The key thing for me, which people don’t probably see, is how he has been really good in the difficult moments. There’s been a lot of success but there have been a few choppy times and he has always been a real stable presence in the dressing room.”

Only that match at Fulham still remaining and then…

Eddie Howe looking ahead to the summer and beyond: “It’s a big summer for us, a huge summer for the football club. The results how you finish the season give hope for the next and that is what we are trying to do. You never know what can happen. It does feel it has the potential to be that summer for us, but regardless of big change or not we have to come out of that transfer window stronger.”
