The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to feature 74 matches, maintaining consistency with the previous three seasons. This decision contrasts with the league’s initial projection of 84 matches reported when media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle were auctioned. In the rights tender, the IPL proposed a structure where the number of matches would vary throughout the contract period. Seasons 2023 and 2024 are scheduled for 74 matches, while 2025 and 2026 would see an increase to 84 matches, culminating in a maximum of 94 matches for the final year of the deal in 2027.

The reduction in matches for the 2025 season appears to stem from a strategic consideration regarding player workload management. With the Indian national team poised as strong contenders for a spot in the World Test Championship final, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to prioritize the recovery and preparation of its players. The championship final is slated for June 11 at Lord’s. Jay Shah, the outgoing BCCI president, recently highlighted the organization’s focus on balancing the number of matches with player welfare.

As of now, the specific dates for IPL 2025 are yet to be confirmed, although the tournament is expected to take place between mid-March and late May. Shah emphasized that while the contractual terms encompass the potential for an 84-match season, the ultimate decision rests with the BCCI, taking into account the implications of a congested tournament schedule on player fatigue.

In terms of financials, the IPL soared to new heights when media rights were auctioned in 2022 for an astounding INR 48,390.5 crore (approximately USD 6.2 billion), thereby establishing itself among the most lucrative sporting leagues in the world based on match value. The media rights were divided into four comprehensive packages:

  • Package A covers television rights in the Indian subcontinent.

  • Package B is concerned with digital rights within the same region.

  • Package C encompasses high-profile digital rights specific to India, including marquee matches and the playoffs, with an allocation of 18 to 22 such matches each season.

  • Package D encompasses global media rights segmented across five different regions.

The total match count directly influences the number of matches included in Package C. The IPL has classified this as the ‘special package,’ which must include the tournament opener as well as the playoffs, including the final. The IPL’s governing body will determine the specific evening matches from the double-header schedule that are included in this package, based on the total matches played in the season.

For a season comprising 74 matches, the allocation for Package C confirms 18 special matches. However, if the total were to increase beyond this number, the allocation for the special package would rise by two matches for every additional ten matches played. Therefore, should the league opt for 84 matches in a season, the special package would extend to 20 matches, while a total of 94 matches would allow for 22 matches in this premium category.
