Aaron Rai’s breakout moment delivers major magic at the PGA Championship.
Aaron Rai’s stunning charge to claim the 2026 PGA Championship has quickly become one of the defining stories of the season, as the understated Englishman surged past a stacked leaderboard to secure his first major title.
Starting the final round within striking distance but far from the spotlight, Rai ignited his challenge with a brilliant eagle on the par-5 ninth before taking command on Aronimink’s demanding back nine.
His closing five-under 65 saw him reach nine-under for the week, finishing three shots clear and etching his name into golfing history.
The win carried extra weight given the context, with more than 20 players within four shots of the lead entering Sunday in one of the most congested leaderboards ever seen at a PGA Championship.
While big names like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas all had chances, Rai was the one who delivered when it mattered, combining clinical iron play with a hot putter to separate himself from a world-class field.
The defining moment arrived late in the round at the par-3 17th, where Rai drained a long-range birdie putt that effectively sealed the championship.
“Very surreal… definitely wasn’t trying to hole that putt,” Rai said about his incredible putt on the par-3 17th hole to seal the victory. “Amazing to see that go in.”
Rai’s triumph also marked a significant milestone. He became the first Englishman to win the PGA Championship in more than a century.
Known as one of the tour’s quieter figures, Rai earned widespread admiration from his peers, with fellow professionals quick to highlight both his work ethic and humility in the aftermath of his breakthrough win.
For the Australian contingent, it was a solid if unspectacular week.
Cameron Smith led the way with a tie for seventh at four-under par after missing the cut in his previous six major championships.
Min Woo Lee battled through to finish at one-under and inside the top 20.
