SCORECARD

Yorkshire’s bowlers continued their ruthless streak to polish off the Surrey lower middle order and tail and wrap up a superb second win of the Rothesay County Championship season at Headingley this morning, this by an innings and 127 runs.

The White Rose have now won two, lost two and drawn two from the opening block of the Division One season.

Previously unbeaten Surrey, following-on, started day four on 83-5 in their second innings, still 199 runs behind. They were bowled out 15 minutes before lunch for 155.

The writing was on the wall for Surrey when unbeaten overnight pair Dom Sibley and Josh Blake fell inside the opening 10 minutes of play as they fell to 90-7. That left Yorkshire within touching distance of what would later prove to be a 23-point haul to the visitors’ two.

There was later a touch of resistance from ninth-wicket pair Sean Abbott and Matthew Fisher, who shared 25, and then Abbott and last man Dan Worrall. They added 35. But it was nothing to write home about and only served to delay the inevitable.

Not only was this Surrey’s first defeat of the season in six games, it was also their first innings defeat in the Championship since late May 2024, when they were beaten by Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl.

Sibley, who made 34, was actually dropped at leg slip in the day’s first full over off Jack White before he edged departing Australian Test quick Jhye Richardson to second slip in the next, where Harry Brook took a sharp catch going to his left.

White then trapped Blake lbw pushing forwards, leaving Surrey 90-7 in the 32nd over, the day’s third full over.

And shortly afterwards, he bowled Jordan Clark with one that shot through low. There was very little the batter could do about his dismissal.

During the aforementioned Abbott and Fisher ninth-wicket stand, the latter was struck a fearsome blow on the back of the helmet by a bouncer from Revis which didn’t get up as much as the batter expected.

There was a lengthy delay, and two balls after it he was on his way back to the pavilion having edged the same bowler to Joe Root at first slip, 120-9.

Worall later  had his off-stump uprooted by George Hill, who struck for the first time in the innings and the fifth time in the match to wrap things up.

Yorkshire were outstanding. As impressive as the Somerset win at Taunton was earlier this month, this was a far better all-round performance given they dominated from start to finish.

After first-innings centuries for Adam Lyth (141) and captain Jonny Bairstow (120) underpinned Yorkshire’s 486 all out, this was a real team effort with the ball from the hosts, who bounced back impressively from defeat against Warwickshire at Edgbaston last week.

The White Rose will now turn their attentions to the start of the Vitality Blast, which begins for them at Trent Bridge against Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Friday evening.
