West Brom must rival Blackburn Rovers to sign their answer to Bruno Fernandes

One of James Morrison’s priorities in the upcoming summer transfer window should be to add more creativity to the West Bromwich Albion squad.

The Baggies ended the 2026/27 campaign with 48 goals scored in 46 Championship matches, and only four teams scored fewer goals than them in the division.

Adding more creative players and goalscorers to the group has to be one of the first things that the new permanent West Brom coach looks to do this summer.

In the Premier League, which is where the Baggies want to get to, Bruno Fernandes just registered his 20th assist for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The Portuguese star is the kind of player that Morrison needs in his West Brom squad, as he can provide consistent creative quality from open play and set-pieces.

Blackburn eyeing move for English playmaker

The Baggies should be in the market to sign a Fernandes-esque talent to ensure that their team is not as stagnant offensively as it was this season.

That is why they should be looking to join the race to sign an English playmaker who is being eyed up by one of their Championship rivals.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Blackburn Rovers are considering a move to sign attacking midfielder Sam Greenwood from Pogoń Szczecin in the upcoming summer transfer window. The former Leeds United youngster joined the Ekstraklasa outfit in the summer of 2025, and English teams are already looking to bring him back to the Championship.

Blackburn are keeping tabs on his situation and Nixon claims that they could swoop to secure his services if the money is right for them and Greenwood. Now, the Baggies should take notice of Rovers’ interest in the 24-year-old talent and rival them to his signature when the summer transfer window opens for business.

How Sam Greenwood can be West Brom’s own Bruno Fernandes

Greenwood, whose set-piece ability was described as a “weapon” by pundit Noel Whelan, has the potential to be the EFL’s own version of Bruno Fernandes if he can take the next step in his development.

Whilst on loan at Preston North End in the Championship last season, the English magician created a whopping 14 ‘big chances’ in 29 starts before making the move to Poland.

Greenwood, who has scored three goals and created three ‘big chances’ in 15 starts in Poland this season, showed that he can be an outstanding creator in the EFL during his time at Deepdale.

He was the standout creator in a host of creative metrics per 90 for Preston, which shows that the potential is there for him to be a Fernandes-level talent in the number ten position for West Brom, and for Blackburn.

The next step for Greenwood to be like Fernandes, though, is for him to add more consistency in front of goal as a scorer, as the United star has scored ten or more goals in eight of the last nine seasons.

At academy level, the Pogoń Szczecin star scored 22 goals in 43 games for Leeds at U21 level and 15 goals in 39 matches for Arsenal’s U18s, which suggests that the potential is there for him to score goals on a regular basis.

That has not yet translated over to first-team football, though, as Greenwood has yet to score more than seven goals in all competitions in a single season at club level.

If he can add consistency as a scorer, as he did at youth level, then the English maestro could be West Brom’s own version of Bruno Fernandes by being an exceptional creator who can also be a threat with goals.

Greenwood’s potential to be an outstanding number ten at Championship level is why the Baggies must rival Blackburn to his signature, because they are in desperate need of attacking quality and the ex-Leeds talent could be a diamond in the rough.
