Packers’ Trey Smack Shares A Must-hear Story About His Unexpected Football Journey

The Green Bay Packers have a new kicker who has been turning heads in the offseason.

For one, he is the only kicker selected at the 2026 NFL Draft, and that’s Florida Gators football product Trey Smack.

Green Bay is definitely hoping that Smack turns out to be the right man for the job, having invested a sixth-round (216th overall) pick to get him off the draft board.

Time can only tell just how good he can be at his job in the NFL, but Smack seems like he’s got all the confidence in the world that he can satisfy the team’s needs in that role.

A global pandemic helped pave the way for Smack to becoming a Packers kicker

Interestingly enough, Smack didn’t initially dream of having a kicking career. Lacrosse was his primary focus, but when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt, Smack decided to revisit his interest in kicking field goals.

“They locked up all the lacrosse goals in Maryland, and so I was like, ‘Well, they can’t take down the field goal posts,’” Smack said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “So, I started kicking, started doing my thing, and somehow I went to a camp nine months down the line and got ranked 13th in the nation.”

Years later, Smack is with Green Bay.

However, he is not without competition, with Lucas Havrisik still on the team. Havrisik also has an interesting background, as he was about to become a substitute teacher in 2025 until the Packers called after then-kicker Brandon McManus went down with an injury.

In four seasons with the Gators, Smack went 100-for-101 on extra-point kicks and made 53 of his 64 field-goal tries.
