Quarterfinal Thursday at the Hamburg ATP 500 features just one all-seeded showdown: Alex de Minaur vs. Luciano Darderi. A much more surprising matchup pits Ugo Humbert against Ignacio Buse.
(7) Luciano Darderi vs. (3) Alex de Minaur
At some point you have to think Darderi will run out of gas — perhaps intentionally — before getting some much-needed days off prior to the French Open. The 16th-ranked Italian has already played 14 matches on this clay-court swing, including five en route to a semifinal showing in Rome and two at the Hamburg Open (defeated Roman Andres Burruchaga and Yannick Hanfmann earlier this week).

Up next for Darderi is a quarterfinal contest against De Minaur, whom the 24-year-old has never faced. It is a bit of a different story for De Minaur, who played only seven clay-court matches before arriving in Hamburg. Racking up wins and confidence is important for the ninth-ranked Australian, and that is exactly what he is doing. De Minaur secured his spot in the last eight by beating Francisco Cerundolo 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Although clay may not be the 27-year-old’s best surface, he is — regardless of the setting — one of the last guys anyone wants to run into when fatigue is a factor.
Pick: De Minaur in 2
(Q) Ignacio Buse vs. Ugo Humbert
Buse is one win away from matching the best result of his career — a semifinal at the ATP 500 in Rio earlier this season. This would be even more impressive, because the Peruvian’s path through the Hamburg Open draw has been more difficult. After successfully qualifying, Buse beat Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik in straight sets. Already up to a career-high ranking of No. 57, the 22-year-old has more than doubled his previous tour-level match win total in 2026 (from eight to 17)
Up first for Buse on Thursday is Humbert, whom he has never faced. Although the Frenchman is ranked higher (34th), he would only be favored in this matchup on a hard court or grass. On clay, it is a much different story. This has always been Humbert’s worst surface, so the fact that he has even advanced this far — ousting Justin Engel and Karen Khachanov — is borderline shocking. The 27-year-old Frenchman required third-set tiebreakers to survive both matches. As such, fatigue could be a factor in the quarterfinals — giving Buse even more reason to secure the victory.
Pick: Buse in 2
