Insider drops intriguing take on Matthew Stafford’s LA outlook

Recently, the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford agreed to a contract extension worth $55 million (including $40 million guaranteed at signing) and locks the veteran, who helped them win Super Bowl LVI, down until 2027.

While discussing the recent extension on ESPN, Senior NFL Insider Dan Graziano said that while the contract doesn’t guarantee that Stafford will play another two years for the Rams, he would be surprised if he wasn’t still a member of the team following the upcoming 2026 NFL season.

“On some level, it means that Stafford is at least considering that he wants to play two more years,” Graziano said via ESPN on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Now it doesn’t guarantee that. What they’ve done here is that they’ve added…his deal was supposed to expire after ’26. They add $55 million next year, but the way they’ve been doing it with Stafford has been year to year. He and Sean McVay and the Rams front office huddle after the year, they get together, and they say, ‘Do we want to do this again? What will it look like?’ I would expect that to happen after ’26 no matter how it ends, but it seems like he’s got his eye on playing two more years, and if he does, the Rams want to make sure they have something in place.”

This past season, Stafford was among the game’s elite at his position, leading the NFL in both passing yards (4,707) and passing touchdowns (46) while taking home his first MVP award; he also completed 65 percent of his passes.
