The Indian cricket team has just won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. BCCI has announced a prize-money of 125 Crore inr for the whole team, after the win. Sandeep Patil, Indian former batter urges the BCCI to provide funds for cancer patient and ex coach Anshuman Gaikwad.
India won the T20 World Cup finals against South Africa by 7 runs after a thrilling face-off between the two teams at Barbados. The men in blue went undefeated this season, winning all their matches and taking the trophy home.
Sandeep Patil urges the BCCI
Former cricketer Sandeep Patil praised the BCCI for awarding ₹125 crore to the victorious India team led by Rohit Sharma in the 2024 T20 World Cup and suggested providing financial help to the retired player and coach Anshuman Gaekwad.
Gaekwad has been undergoing treatment for blood cancer for the last year and Patil mentioned that he had seen the 71-year-old at King’s College Hospital in London. Patil also mentioned that Gaekwad told him about requiring money for his medical treatment then.
“Anshu told me that he needs funds for his treatment. Soon, Dilip Vengsarkar and me spoke to BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar. In fact, our calls were made to Ashish Shelar after seeing Anshu at King’s College Hospital in London. Ashish Shelar instantly said he would look into ours and other former cricketers’ request for funds,” said Patil in a column on Mid-Day
“I’m sure he will facilitate this and, at the risk of sounding macabre, save Anshu’s life. Any cricketer from any country should be helped by his Board, but Anshu’s case must be taken on priority and treated as paramount.” He added.
Anshuman Gaikwad coached these Indian legends
As a player, Gaekwad participated in 40 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals for India throughout a 12-year international career from 1975 to 1987. Gaekwad served as India’s head coach twice, first from 1997 to 1999 and then in 2000.
His initial period was during Sachin Tendulkar’s leadership while the Indian team was undergoing changes, and his second was post the late 1990s match-fixing controversy.
Anil Kumble achieved the feat of taking 10 wickets in an innings during Gaekwad’s first period in a Test against Pakistan, helping to even the series. During his term, India defeated Australia 2-1 in a series at home and tied an ODI series in New Zealand.
During his short return, Gaekwad guided India to the ICC Knockout final in 2000.The former legend who created so many legends, needs monetary help from the BCCI as he goes through a terminal illness, cancer.
