NHL Rumors: Devon Levi, Ilya Mikheyev, and Sidney Crosby

Teams are interested in Buffalo Sabres goaltender Devon Levi, including the Ottawa Senators

Kevin Weekes: Have been told that Buffalo Sabres goaltender Devon Levi is getting some trade interest from several teams. The Ottawa Senators are one of the teams interested.

Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators could turn to the Buffalo Sabres for their backup to Linus Ullmark next season, according to Weekes’ report. Senators GM Steve Staios said that adding a reliable backup is a priority.

Levi has a year left on his contract at $812,500 and would require waivers if sent to the AHL, which is likely why Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen is testing the waters to see what teams would offer up.

If the Sabres want a goaltender back, they may ask the Senators for Leevi Merilainen, who is a pending RFA that also requires waivers and who struggled last season.

Ilya Mikheyev’s rights are available if someone wants to beat free agency

NHL Rumour Report: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast on Chicago Blackhawks pending UFA Ilya Mikheyev: “Chicago probably isn’t going to be able to sign Ilya Mikheyev, and so his rights are available if any team wants to talk to him in advance of free agency.”

Year-to-year contracts make sense for Sidney Crosby

Josh Yohe of The Athletic: After the season, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said he’ll be taking it as a year-by-year approach. He’s got one year left on his deal, so could that mean that next year could be his last.

The soon to be 39-year old said: “Not at all.”

Crosby adds.

“Yeah, I’m saying year to year based on contracts,” he explained. “It just seems to make sense. I mean, it could change. We’ll see. Kyle (Dubas) and I haven’t even talked about it. But I’ll talk with Pat (Brisson) and Kyle later this summer. We’ll talk about it and do what makes sense. If it does make sense to sign for a couple of years, then we’ll do that.”

Shorter contracts give GM Kyle Dubas more options and flexibility. Crosby has said he only wants to play for the Penguins. Crosby is 160 points behind Jaromir Jagr for second all-time in NHL scoring.
