2026 French Open action gets underway on Sunday with nearly one-third of the women’s slate scheduled to hit the red clay in Paris. Among them, Emma Raducanu squares off against Solana Sierra. Ilemona Onekutu and Tope Oke offer their insights. But who will advance?
French Open Day 1 Predictions
Magdalena Frech vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse
Ilemona
Frech and Ruse are both capable clay-court performers who like to stay deep on the baseline and construct points patiently. Ruse carries a ranking of 61 into this one and has been consistent through the spring, while Frech has had a mixed year. This should be close, but Ruse’s ability to absorb pressure and find angles at crucial moments should see her through.
Prediction: Ruse in 3
Tope
Magdalena Frech arrives in Paris short on rhythm and confidence, with just one win in her last eight outings since her Mérida final run and little evidence her clay game is holding up under pressure. Elena-Gabriela Ruse, by contrast, has shown far more bite on the surface this season, reaching a semi-final in Linz and pushing Elena Rybakina to three sets in Madrid, a reminder of her ability to trouble higher-ranked opponents when she finds her range. With two clay-court WTA finals already on her résumé and a stronger recent competitive edge, the Romanian looks better equipped to control the patterns here and is fancied to extend her winning streak over Frech.
Prediction: Ruse in 3
Clara Tauson vs Daria Snigur
Ilemona
Tauson arrives with enough firepower to threaten in this section of the draw, and her game, based on explosive ball-striking and an ability to take time away from opponents, translates well to clay when she is playing freely. Snigur has been competitive on the surface this year but does not quite match Tauson’s ceiling when the Dane is at full throttle. Tauson’s serve and groundstrokes should give her the freedom to dictate this match.
Prediction: Tauson in 2
Tope
Clara Tauson arrives in Paris desperate for a reset. The Dane has endured a miserable run of form, losing her last four matches and failing to register a win on clay this season, but this draw offers a genuine opportunity to stop the slide. Tauson has dominated her previous two meetings with Daria Snigur, winning both in straight sets, and still possesses the heavier firepower from the baseline. Snigur has shown flashes of promise, but she remains a level below the world #21 in terms of overall quality. Tauson should have enough to shake off her recent struggles and kickstart her Roland-Garros campaign with a much-needed victory.
Prediction: Tauson in 3
Marina Bassols Ribera vs Emiliana Arango
Ilemona
Both enjoy the clay and can grind out long points. Marina Bassols Ribera has home-like comfort on the surface and solid recent results. Bassols Ribera’s slightly superior clay-court record this season and her depth of experience on the dirt give her the marginal edge.
Prediction: Bassols Ribera in 3
Tope
Marina Bassols Ribera and Emiliana Arango meet in what looks set to be a gritty, momentum-heavy baseline battle, where neither player is likely to give much away for free. Expect long exchanges, and a match that likely hinges on who handles pressure better in the big points. Both players are well adept on clay but I’ll go with the in-form Spaniard to notch her fourth win on the bounce to grind out a win
Prediction: Ribera in 3
Emma Raducanu vs Solana Sierra
Ilemona
Raducanu’s clay preparations were limited to a single tournament, where she lost in the first round in Strasbourg, and she has won just one match since February. Sierra, meanwhile, reached the fourth round in Madrid and the third round in Rome, also pushing Coco Gauff close in the Italian capital. The Argentine is a clay specialist whose movement and competitive intensity on the surface represent a genuine problem for a player who has had so little time on the dirt this spring. Sierra’s superior preparation and confidence on clay make her the more dangerous player here.
Prediction: Sierra in 3
Tope
Emma Raducanu arrives in Paris short on matches and confidence, making this a dangerous first-round assignment. The Brit has struggled with form, winning just one of her last five matches and managing only a limited clay-court schedule before Roland Garros. Against a player who thrives on the surface, Raducanu’s struggles could be exposed from the outset. Solana Sierra has quietly put together an impressive European clay swing, collecting seven wins and pushing reigning champion Coco Gauff hard in Rome. With the Argentine looking increasingly comfortable on the dirt and Raducanu still searching for match sharpness, this has all the ingredients of a potential upset, with Sierra well placed to spring a surprise
Prediction: Sierra in 2
