Here is the basketball instruction formatted into sections for readability:

Introduction

  • The Layer 1 Read and React Offense has more reads and reactions taught in this layer than any other.
  • Good spacing yields good offense, so learning to use the spots to keep spacing is key to learning good offense.
  • Correct spacing is absolutely necessary for learning the read and react.

Passing Rules

  • Whenever a pass is made one spot away from the ball, the passer must make a basket cut. This is a rule that will never change.
  • Empty spots on the floor are to be filled, with the highest priority to spots one pass away from the ball.

Cuts

  • Players learn what front cuts and rear cuts are, and when to use each.
  • The read line, typically the 3 point line, is very important, and players will learn how to use it.

Teaching the System

  • Start with the big-picture drills, then move to the details.
  • Start with a simple 5-man give-and-go drill to establish the habits and reactions.

5-Out Formation

  • There are two key reactions that must become automatic:
    1. If you pass one spot away, you must basket cut.
    2. If the spot above you towards the ball is empty, you must fill it.
  • Let’s learn first from corner to corner. The corner cut looks awkward at first.
  • Now let’s pass and cut randomly to get the habits ingrained.

4-Out Formation

  • Nothing changes but the perimeter spots. 6 spots are created.
  • Sometimes this works as a temporary overload on one side.

3-Out/2-In Formation

  • The perimeter spots change back to the 5-out formation.
  • With practice, players change formations without thinking.

The Read Line

  • For most teams, the 3-point line is the read line for automatic backdoor cuts.
  • If your defender has one foot over the read line, you must basket cut.
  • This counters perimeter defensive pressure.
  • If you don’t cut, you shut down the offense on your side.
  • Cutting vacates a spot for a teammate to fill with a higher chance of being open.
  • If the defense denies your teammate, they will then also need to basket cut. Eventually, it creates a tougher situation for the defense.

So in summary, the read and react focuses on spacing, passing, cutting, and reading the defense to create good shots. Teaching starts from the big picture and works down to the details through repetitive drills.
