Match of The Day (May 23) – Dutch Baseball Hangout

No close games yesterday. Only blowout scores. But there was a surprising score in Deurne, where the Spartans hosted Phoenix Mont-Saint Guibert.

Phoenix Mont-Saint Guibert 13 – 5 Deurne Spartans

A surprising score as Deurne Spartans is still considered a power house in Belgian baseball, although their season is far from good so far.

Phoenix got off a good start in the first inning. Spartans’ starting pitcher Will Alejandro Abreu issued five walks on which one run was scored. Besides struggling to find the strike zone, Abreu gave up a three run home run to Oreste Garcia Pupo. After he gave up that run-scoring walk, Abreu was replaced by William Daniel Riera Valenzuela, who started his outing with a walk too, allowing Owen Kolb to score Phoenix’ fifth run of the inning.

But Spartans hit back in the bottom of the first when Johiner Alfonso Arguizones Ocanto hit a two run homer to right field. In the bottom of the third ininng, Alexis Marquez drove in another run for Spartans with a single to left center field.

In the fourth inning, Mont-Saint-Guibert scored twice and Deurne scored once as both did in the in the sixth frame as well. But from there, the bats of Deurne mainly remained silent.

Phoenix on the other hand added three runs in the eighth and one more run in the ninth to clinch a surprising victory.

Robbe de Jongh worked his way through eight innings, allowing five runs on ten hits, as he struck out three. Will Alejandro Abreu took the loss.

Chad Herrera was the best hitter for Mont-Saint-Guibert as he went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. He proved to be very patient at bat as he drew three walks.

Game two of this series will be played today.
