Day 2 belonged largely to Marques Ackerman as the South Africa A captain transformed a promising position into a commanding first-innings total, before the England Lions responded with resilience to keep themselves in the contest heading into Day 3.
Resuming with a narrow lead and work still to do, South Africa A found themselves relying heavily on Ackerman after early wickets on the opening morning had left them under pressure at 54/5.
The left-hander responded with an innings of authority and composure, producing a magnificent 173 off 136 deliveries. Ackerman struck 25 fours and five sixes as he counterattacked the England Lions bowlers and shifted the momentum decisively in South Africa A’s favour.
He first rebuilt alongside Prenelan Subrayen, whose valuable 29 helped stabilise the innings, before farming the strike effectively with the tail. Dane Paterson also made an important contribution lower down the order with an unbeaten 27, allowing Ackerman to continue playing freely as the visitors pushed beyond the 300-run mark.
From a worrying 104/6, South Africa A eventually posted 331 all out in 58.5 overs, securing a significant first-innings lead of 174 runs.
For the England Lions, Mitch Stanley and Eddie Jack continued their impressive work from Day 1 with three wickets each, while Dan Mousley chipped in with two late wickets, including the prized scalp of Ackerman.
Facing a reachable deficit, the England Lions produced a much steadier batting effort in their second innings.
Ben McKinney started positively with a quick 32 before falling to Nqobani Mokoena, while Asa Tribe anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 88 off 177 deliveries. Tribe showed patience and discipline throughout his innings, frustrating the South Africa A attack for long periods and ensuring the hosts remained within touching distance.
Dan Mousley contributed 15 before falling to Prenelan Subrayen, while Dane Paterson trapped Ben Geddes lbw after another disciplined spell with the new ball. Charlie Allison added seven before being run out by a sharp piece of fielding from Tony de Zorzi.
Ben Mayes then provided valuable support for Tribe late in the day, finishing unbeaten on 35 as the pair guided the England Lions to 213/4 at stumps.
South Africa A’s bowlers maintained control for much of the innings without quite managing to break the game open. Paterson once again impressed with his accuracy, finishing with 1/37 from 13 overs, while Ottneil Baartman delivered an economical spell of 0/30 in 11 overs. Mokoena and Subrayen also claimed a wicket apiece.
At the close of play, the England Lions still trailed by 118 runs with six wickets remaining, leaving the match finely poised heading into Day 3.
