MJF and Mick Foley had their first on-screen confrontation in AEW during Sunday’s Double or Nothing Buy In, with the AEW Title vs Hair main event challenger crossing paths with the newly-debuted WWE Hall of Famer in an exchange that ended with MJF delivering a low blow to Foley.
The segment took place during the Buy In show that Foley was co-hosting alongside Renee Paquette. MJF approached the desk area where Foley was set up, with the exchange building from a verbal sparring into a physical confrontation when MJF brought up Foley’s loss totals and Foley fired back referencing his career history of major wins.
“I did lose a lot of matches, but there’s a young man named Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who might remember a couple of wins I got too. Never in any of those losses did I have a match that ended in 2 minutes and 15 seconds. That’s not a loss, that’s a disgrace!”
The “2 minutes 15 seconds” reference is to Darby Allin’s recent AEW World Championship win over MJF in Everett, WA, where Allin pinned MJF in under three minutes to capture the title. Foley’s framing positions the under-3-minute loss as the central insult MJF is trying to live down ahead of his Title vs Hair rematch on the main card. Foley’s career win over The Rock he referenced is to his 1998 Mr. Socko match against The Rock on Raw, where Foley as Mankind defeated The Rock to win the WWzr Championship in the first half of their multi-match feud.
Foley last wrestled in 2012 and has been managing hip and knee replacement issues in the years since. MJF used his recent media tour (including The Ariel Helwani Show, TV Insider, Shakiel Mahjouri, Jon Alba, and Phenomenally Retro) to publicly call Foley “fat and ugly” and describe him as “the blueprint of what Darby Allin is now.”
Foley and MJF have previously laid out a six-week retirement program for Foley that fell through due to Foley’s health concerns.
