Chattanooga, TN – Wesleyan University (women) and the University of Chicago (men) have been crowned national champions this past week in Tennessee at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships.
Both championship fixtures being moved indoors due to weather in the Chattanooga area, each final treated fans to excitement from first serve to last with momentum swings happening early and often across both championship fixtures.
Starting on Thursday with the women’s final, Wesleyan faced off against defending national champions WashU who returned numerous contributors from last year’s team, giving them the edge when it came to experience on the biggest of stages.
In doubles, both Wesleyan and WashU split decisions on courts No. 2 and No. 3 moving all eyes to doubles court No. 1 where both teams looked for the early edge. Getting the break late, the Wesleyan duo of Leila Epstein and Lucinda Gatsiounis took down the nation’s No. 1 ranked doubles team in Elanor Archer and Caitlin Bui 6-4 to claim the doubles point.
In Singles play, WashU threw the first punch winning the first sets on four of the six singles courts. However, not phased by the moment, Wesleyan would win on courts No. 4 and No. 5 in straight sets, while WashU picked up a point on court No. 3 to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
After fighting back from dropping the first set, it was Agnes Guggenheim (Wesleyan) who delivered the clinch on court No. 2 for Wesleyan. Going up a break early, Guggenheim never looked back and delivered in the biggest of moments for the Cardinals, bringing home another national championship for the Wesleyan program.
Moving to Friday and the men’s championship, UChicago squared off against CMS in what turned out to be a 4-3 battle between two of the powerhouses of Division III Tennis.
Coming in as the top seeded team, CMS was the first team to strike on Friday as they looked dominant in doubles, winning on court No. 1 and No. 2 moving them ahead early as sights now turned to singles.
With four straight set decisions in singles, it was UChicago who took three of the four points, winning at lines No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to move ahead of CMS 3-2 after Advik Mareedu (CMS) won his final match of his historic collegiate career at the No. 1 singles position.
It was the Stags who claimed the next point on court No. 3 to level the score at 3-3 with the championship now all resting on the result from the No. 2 singles line. After dripping the first set, Emil Grantcharov (UChicago) turned the tides of the match winning the second set 6-1 and the third set 6-4 to begin the celebrations for the Maroons.
