Alan Shearer quizzed on whether Eddie Howe should still be in charge at Newcastle United next season

Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Eddie Howe.

Whether or not the Newcastle United Head Coach deserves to still be in charge when the 2026/27 season kicks off.

Eddie Howe guiding United to a domestic cup semi-final in the League Cup, plus fifth round in the FA Cup. As well as the first time Newcastle United have ever reached the knockout stages of the Champions League.

A different story though in the Premier League, Newcastle United ending the season in 12th place on 49 points.

Asked about Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United, Alan Shearer declaring: “Eddie Howe deserves the chance to go again [next season] and work with whoever they decide to bring in [during the summer transfer window] and then hopefully have a good start to the season.”

Less than two months now until pre-season for the 2026/27 campaign begins for Newcastle United.

The players [with World Cup exceptions] set to report back to the training ground on Monday 13 July to prepare for a huge season that kicks off on the weekend of Saturday 22 August.

Alan Shearer stating: “I don’t know what has gone on, or what is going on in terms of at the training ground, because I am not part of that. But we also have to remember that these are the guys that brought Newcastle United huge success. They brought a trophy to the club [in the 2024/25 season] and I do think that is one of the reasons why they should be able to go again this summer, to try and work out what has gone wrong [this 2025/26 season in the Premier League].”

The summer 2025 transfer window ended up a shambles, with the Newcastle United owners refusing to sell the on strike Alexander Isak and insisting he wouldn’t be allowed to leave. Only to then do an abrupt u-turn on deadline day. Leaving things so late in the day to sell, had severely impacted on the ability to bring in the two strikers needed with Callum Wilson having already left.

The shambles also seeing the Newcastle United owners failing to have the key senior staff in place at the club.

Alan Shearer speaking on behalf of Betfair saying: “I think summer [2025] as a whole was very, very difficult for Newcastle United…we had no sporting director, no CEO, that left a big hole for us. I think we are in a lot better position now [with Ross Wilson and David Hopkinson in place] to hopefully execute what we need to do.”
