£160,000-a-week star “set to join Spurs” but is not De Zerbi’s first choice

£160,000-a-week star “set to join Spurs” but is not De Zerbi’s first choice

An “incredible” star is now set to become Tottenham Hotspur’s first summer signing, with an agreement in principle being reached.

Roberto De Zerbi outlines plans to build “new team”

Roberto De Zerbi achieved his first goal as Tottenham manager by leading his side to safety on Sunday, with a first-half Joao Palhinha goal securing all three points against Everton, in a result that condemned West Ham United to relegation from the Premier League.

However, despite winning the 2025 Europa League, it has been a tumultuous couple of years for Spurs to say the very least, finishing in 17th place for the past two seasons on the bounce, and the Italian has now outlined his plans to reshape his squad this summer.

De Zerbi said: “From tonight we need to build the new team. We don’t need to change too many players. We have 10, 11, 12 players who are good enough to stay as players and people.

“Now we need to complete the squad with the first level of players because I suffered too much but so did the players, the board and the fans and we can’t suffer like this as Tottenham Hotspur.”

It has since emerged that De Zerbi could be about to seal his first summer signing.

Tottenham now “set” to sign “incredible” player

In a recent update on X, reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed Andy Robertson is “set to join Spurs”, with the Scotland captain reaching an agreement in principle to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium upon the expiration of his Liverpool contract.

A deal is in place, with the £160k-a-week left-back making his final appearance for the Reds in their 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

Last month, former midfielder Charlie Adam suggested Liverpool should keep hold of Robertson, with the Scot of the belief he is still a better player than fellow left-back Milos Kerkez.

Adam said: “I think you can put him up there as a legend of the football club. He’s won every major honour, he’s been there nine years, his performances over the years have been incredible.

“And for me, I still think he’s the best left-back in the football club. He’s been one of the great Liverpool left-backs over time.”

The 32-year-old has made 332 appearances in the Premier League, during spells with the Reds and Hull City, who were recently promoted from the Championship, and he’s displayed his attacking quality by chipping in with 12 goals and 60 assists.

Robertson is seemingly poised to join Tottenham, but last month it was revealed De Zerbi was keen on signing an alternative option, namely AC Milan star Pervis Estupinan, who is also experienced in the Premier League, amassing four goals and 11 assists in 84 outings for Brighton & Hove Albion.
