Manager very keen to join West Ham as Hammers eye ‘statement’ Nuno successor

Manager very keen to join West Ham as Hammers eye ‘statement’ Nuno successor

The final whistle at the London Stadium told only half the story.

West Ham beat Leeds 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, their best performance in weeks, but it meant nothing.

Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Everton at the other end of London confirmed what had felt inevitable — the Hammers are relegated.

It is the end of a 14-year stay in the Premier League, and the highest points total for a relegated side in 15 years, which offers scant consolation to a fanbase left devastated by a season of underperformance, internal chaos and missed opportunities.

Now, the fallout has begun.

Sky Sports and many other outlets have reported today that Nuno Espírito Santo was called into crisis talks with the West Ham hierarchy, with widespread expectation that the 52-year-old will be dismissed imminently.

The Daily Mail’s Matt Lawton described the meeting as one that sources believe will conclude with his departure.

Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

The England international could be one of many Hammers on the way out.

West Ham hold a clause in Nuno’s contract that allows them to terminate the agreement without compensation following relegation, and the Portuguese is also free to walk away on the same terms.

Either way, his eight-month tenure — 12 wins from 37 games since replacing Graham Potter in late September — looks likely to be over.

Nuno inherited a squad already in trouble when he arrived, and a squad which will likely be dismantled after the drop.

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo reacts

Potter had taken just three points from the opening five fixtures and left the club 19th in the table.

The Portuguese eventually steadied things and sparked a mini-revival from January, but the improvement was never sustained.

A heated exchange with defender Jean-Clair Todibo after the penultimate game of the season — which reportedly ended with Todibo telling the manager he would not play for him again — painted a picture of a dressing room that had fractured beyond repair.

The question now is who comes next.

Scott Parker very keen to join West Ham amid Nuno sack talk

According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, one name has emerged with real momentum.

Burnley manager Scott Parker looks dejected after the match

Ex-West Ham midfielder Scott Parker is firmly in contention to take charge of his former club, and TT say the 45-year-old would be very keen on the opportunity.

Parker left Burnley in April after the Clarets’ own relegation was confirmed, and he is currently weighing up his next move.

The prospect of returning to the London Stadium — where he spent four years as a player between 2007 and 2011, winning the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award in his final season — is understood to hold deep personal appeal.

TEAMtalk report that sporting director Mark Noble is particularly enthusiastic about the idea.

Noble and Parker were midfield partners during their time together in east London, and the mutual respect between the pair could prove decisive in any appointment process.

Those close to the club believe that reuniting the two former teammates — one in the dugout, the other in the boardroom — would represent a ‘major statement’ as West Ham prepare for life in the Championship.

Parker’s credentials for this specific job are difficult to argue with.

He has won three Championship promotions in six years — with Fulham in 2020, Bournemouth in 2022, and Burnley last season. Only Steve Bruce, with four, has more in the history of the division.

His track record of going down to the second tier and coming straight back up is exactly the profile West Ham need.

There will be questions.

Parker’s two attempts at Premier League management ended in relegation with Fulham and a sacking after four games with Bournemouth. His spell at Club Brugge also lasted just 12 matches.

But at Championship level, he has been close to untouchable, and that is the level West Ham now find themselves operating at.

The talks with Nuno will likely be resolved within hours.

After that, the search for his replacement begins in earnest. Parker, it seems, is ready and waiting.
