Former India cricketer Suresh Raina heaped praise on Gujarat Titans’ (GT) opening pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan for their outstanding partnership in IPL 2026. Raina called them the greatest batting pair in IPL history.
The pair has once again been the backbone of GT’s batting line-up which gave the team solid starts throughout the tournament. “Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are the finest batting pair in the history of TATA IPL,” Raina said on JioHotstar. “In 46 innings together, they have put up 21 partnerships of 50 runs or more.”
Sudharsan (638) and Gill (616) have scored a combined 1254 runs at the top of the order. The duo recently completed their 10th century partnership in T20 cricket. Their consistent performance up top helped GT finish in the second place in the points table with nine wins from 14 matches.
Raina also compared their partnership with legendary IPL pairs like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers. “The next best pair is Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli, followed by AB de Villiers and Kohli in third place,” he said. “This shows the quality of Gill and Sai. They complement each other’s game very well. What stands out is that they have reached 21 fifty-plus stands in just 46 innings – the fastest in IPL history. Gayle and Kohli took 59 innings to get there, while ABD and Kohli needed 76 innings.”
The former CSK batter further added, “The consistency of Gill and Sudharsan as an opening pair is remarkable. They take time to build their innings, keep dot balls to a minimum, and complement each other’s game perfectly.”
GT are all set to face defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Qualifier 1 on Tuesday in Dharamsala.
