Canucks, Oilers, Maple Leafs & Lost Year?

Canucks, Oilers, Maple Leafs & Lost Year?

This edition (May 25, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three quick hits: the Canucks’ Caleb and Manny Malhotra story looks like a feel-good slam dunk, but it could get messy fast if the team drags its feet. Darnell Nurse is hated by some Oilers fans and valued by others, but he might actually fetch a solid return on the trade market if Edmonton decides to move him. And Maple Leafs forward Max Domi had surgery that hit a snag, meaning he’ll miss the start of training camp, leaving a hole in Toronto’s middle-six and making the club’s summer roster work a bit busier.

Could the Malhotra Thing Get Messy?

The situation looks perfect on paper. Manny Malhotra would be coaching his son Caleb. There’s an instant vibe. But Halford and Brough break down how that whole thing could implode: slow announcements, media panic, outside teams poking around, and the weirdness of a dad coaching a top-three pick. Small delays turn into full-on freakouts fast.

Vancouver’s trying to act cool, but leaks and rumours can flip the script overnight. If the Canucks want this to stay a feel-good story, they need to move quickly and keep control. Otherwise, the whole thing could get messy real fast.

The Canucks Coaching Story Is Suddenly Getting Complicated

Nurse Could Be Worth More Than Fans Think

Darnell Nurse has taken heat, but he’s not the walking liability some fans say. And David Staples thinks he could bring back legit value if Edmonton trades him. At 31 with four years left on a big deal, he’s exactly the type of sturdy, two-way defender a cap-rich team with defensive holes would chase.

Rumours link him to San Jose, Toronto and Detroit, and Staples figures multiple teams could be interested. If the Oilers do move him, don’t be shocked if they get a solid return. Maybe even without eating much salary, and a fresh start could actually revive Nurse’s game.

Max Domi Surgery Means He’ll Miss Training Camp

Max Domi had offseason surgery for an issue he played through last year. Now won’t be ready when camp opens. The MAPLE Leafs say he’s out indefinitely and’ll be rechecked in mid‑September. He played 80 games in 2025‑26 (12 goals, 36 points) but battled the injury all season, and complications from the surgery stretched his recovery.

That absence leaves a hole in Toronto’s middle/six and penalty‑kill depth and likely makes GM John Chayka’s offseason even busier as he hunts for bottom‑six help. Domi’s under contract for two more years at $3.75M AAV, and the club expects him to be cleared for the regular season once he’s fully recovered.
