Rohit Sharma breaks this elusive feat of Gautam Gambhir in the second test against Bangladesh

On the fourth day of the second Test match between the two sides today at Kanpur, Rohit Sharma, the current captain of the Indian cricket team, was looking dangerous with the bat against Bangladesh. The 38 years old cricketer, as usual, opened the innings for India at the Green Park Stadium on Monday (September 30), and in his short cameo, he scored 23 runs off just 11 balls. He started scoring runs with glorious back-to-back sixes on the first two deliveries of the second over bowled by Khaled Ahmed, and then smashed one more maximum in the next over before returning back to the dressing room courtesy of Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal (72), both added 55 runs for the first wicket in just 3.5 overs and also helped the team achieve the fastest team fifty in test matches.

Unfortunately, in the first inning, the knock was quite short but quite effective, and Rohit went on to break the record of the Indian men’s cricket head coach Gautam Gambhir, who had scored 4154 runs. Gambhir was a red-ball cricketer in India and scored 4154 runs in 58 tests spanning a career of 12 years. November 2013 in Kolkata against West Indies was the month and year when Rohit played his first Test match and since then upto this date, he has played 61 five-day matches and scored 4171 runs.

In the Test format of the game, 15 batters have scored more runs for India than Rohit. Test cricket’s finest Sachin Tendulkar ranks first with 15,921 runs scored in 200 outings for him. He is followed by Rahul Dravid (13,365), Sunil Gavaskar (10,122), Virat Kohli (8918), VVS Laxman (8781), Virender Sehwag (8503), Sourav Ganguly (7212), Cheteshwar Pujara (7195), Dilip Vengsarkar (6868), Mohammad Azharuddin (6215), Gundappa Viswanath (6080), Kapil Dev (5248), Ajinkya Rahane (5077), MS Dhoni (4876) and Mohinder Amarnath (4378).

Rohit is expected to break more records in the coming months especially in absorbing tests, as India is scheduled to play about eight more Tests in the next three months.

The batter from Mumbai is the highest Test match runs scorer for India in the World Test Championship and 2024 has been kind with two out of the eight tests played earlier this year.

Rohit is up to bat in the second innings of the Test match against Bangladesh. If he scores five sixes in this innings, he will surpass the amount of maximum sixes ever scored by an Indian cricketer in Tests (91), previously held by Sehwag.
