Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is quietly feeling the heat. Last season’s overall 7-6 result and his resistance to the transfer portal and NIL era have put the Tigers in a tough spot. Now, it seems his spot as a highly ranked head coach is also under threat.
College Football World Reacts to Dabo Swinney’s Absence
CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello shared his list of top 25 head coaches in college football. Topping the list was Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti, and capping off the list at No. 25 was Jon Sumrall, who joined Florida this season. The reactions were immediate.
Garage Gameday Sports’ X handle replied, “Did Dabo quit his job this morning? How is he not even here?!”

Similarly, other fans debated the position of other head coaches. Official Ohio State DG ignited the debate about the rankings of Kirby Smart and Ryan Day, who were ranked second and third, respectively. Their X handle wrote, “Kirby and Day are probably tied. But the tie goes to the coach who hasnt had 37 arrests the last 3 years.”
For years, Swinney was a permanent fixture in the top three alongside Nick Saban and Kirby Smart. However, Marcello’s ranking directly mirrors a harsh on-field reality. Swinney hasn’t won a College Football Playoff game since 2019. For an elite program, a half-decade playoff victory drought is an eternity.
So, the general sentiment was a revolution this offseason. Instead, Swinney has opted for internal nostalgia. The big offseason move in Death Valley was bringing back offensive coordinator Chad Morris.
While the defense looked elite in the spring game, racking up nine sacks, the offense remains a massive question mark. Redshirt junior quarterback Christopher Vizzina is stepping into the starting role with only 596 career passing yards to his name.
Relying on an unproven quarterback and a returning coordinator from a decade ago, while ignoring the transfer portal, is precisely why the skepticism around the Tigers is growing.
With a brutal schedule looming that features a heavyweight battle against LSU in the Bayou and a home clash against Miami, Swinney will have every opportunity to prove the snub wrong.
