Barcelona have now made Newcastle United a first formal offer to buy Anthony Gordon.
The usually very reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic revealing on Wednesday afternoon an initial opening offer of €80m (Approx £69.3m) plus potential future add-ons has been made.
The man from The Athletic saying that talks continue between the two clubs with that opening offer now on the table.
Earlier on Wednesday, The Times revealed that that Barcelona had this week made an approach to Newcastle United to try and get a deal done and that the La Liga champions were now in pole position ahead of Bayern Munich. They further reported Liverpool also still holding an interest in signing Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle United had given clubs permission to talk to Gordon’s representatives in later April to start getting things moving and there was a well publicised meeting with Bayern Munich. In Germany that meeting followed by widespread reporting that Bayern had agreed the loose framework of personal terms with the winger.
Three weeks ago, Sport then published images of Barca’s Sporting Director Deco meeting with Anthony Gordon’s agents (Unique Sports Agency representatives Will Salthouse and Adam Dugdale) in Barcelona.
Over in Spain the media there report that now personal terms have already been agreed between Barcelona and Anthony Gordon.
All of this great news for Newcastle United as they look to maximise the return on the former Everton winger who they paid an initial £40m for back in January 2023, plus a potential £5m more in future add-ons.
The Times report today said that their information was that Newcastle United have set an asking price of £75m for Anthony Gordon.
The fact that Anthony Gordon can play on either wing as well as through the middle, means this versatility adds further appeal to the Newcastle United star.
There appears to be a clear determination from both Anthony Gordon and Newcastle United to get a deal done before the World Cup finals. In only five days time the England squad fly to the United States on 1 July to begin their preparations with a training camp and warm up friendlies, ahead of the opening group match on 17 June against Croatia.
