NHL Makes Frederik Andersen Announcement After Hurricanes Win Game 4

The Carolina Hurricanes are humming so far during the 2026 NHL playoffs. After a 4-0 Game 4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference finals, Carolina is ahead 3-1 in the series. Now, the Hurricanes are only one win away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006.

Andersen had a rocky regular season as goaltender for the Canes, with the 13-year veteran finishing the regular season with a 16-14-5 record, a 3.05 goals-against average and a .874 save percentage in 35 starts. Teammate Brandon Bussi saw more action in net for the Canes this season, with the first-year pro posting a 31-6-2 record, a 2.47 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage in 39 games.

Despite the Denmark native’s regular-season struggles, head coach Rod Brind’Amour went with Andersen in net for the 2026 NHL playoffs. The 36-year-old goaltender has proven Brind’Amour made the right choice, with Andersen recording his third shutout of the postseason on Wednesday. The shutout was Andersen’s eighth of his playoff career, third this postseason and fifth in his postseason career with the Hurricanes.

On Wednesday night, following the game against Montreal, the NHL went to social media to announce news of a franchise record set by the Canes goalie. In a post on X, the NHL wrote that with his fifth shutout in Carolina, Andersen has now passed Hurricanes Hall of Famer Cam Ward (4) for the most shutouts in franchise history. In his 12 postseason games, Frederik Andersen is 11-1 with 246 saves on 265 shots against, allowing 19 goals for a 1.56 goals-against average.

Carolina will look to close out Montreal at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET.
