It took a few days for Alonzo Menifield to adjust to the time difference in Macau, China, but ahead of his fight with Zhang Mingyang, he’s now acclimated.
Menifield (17-6-1) saw a two-fight win streak snapped by Volkan Oezdemir last time out, and didn’t hesitate for the co-main event opportunity. “I think he’s fierce, aggressive, and I want to match it,” he said of Zhang during Wednesday’s UFC Macau media day.
Like Menifield, Zhang Mingyang is coming off a loss, in his case a leg kick TKO. Asked for this thoughts on the Chinese light heavyweight’s last performance, Alonzo noted that “a fight is a fight. We move forward. So I’m looking at what he’s good at, which is countering, and seeing how he stays in pockets, or outside.”
“I think opportunity is everywhere, not just leg kicks. So I’m excited about Saturday,” he finished.
Asked if he feels like the veteran in the match-up, Menifield replied by saying “I guess so. I’ve been here a long time, I think that’s a blessing. With that said, every fight is dangerous. I don’t put me above him. I put me right there. He’s in the grinder, I’m in the grinder. That’s my mindset.”
Menifield, who is once again training with Pat Barry after bouncing between camps, did have a prediction for the bout. “He comes out, doing him, I catch him. He goes away. Other than that, if he doesn’t go away, let’s put on a hell of a show. That’s it.”
