Day Five at Roland Garros delivered absolute chaos. In one of the most stunning upsets in recent years, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner saw his 30-match winning streak and Career Grand Slam dream crumble in dramatic fashion, as he physically collapsed and lost from a commanding lead against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
The shocks didn’t stop there. 17-year-old French wild card Moïse Kouamé continued his home soil run with a five-set victory, while Belgium’s Raphael Collignon pulled off a big upset over No. 5 seed Ben Shelton.
With multiple top players already gone, the 2026 French Open is wide open and gives somebody a huge opportunity to win a Grand Slam without Sinner or Alcaraz in the way.
We saw that happen during the US Open 2020, and the end result was a nervy tournament with everyone playing like they had something to lose. Not the best spectacle, as there were also no fans in the Stadium, so hopefully the level in Paris stays high.
Here’s a look at the key matches from Day Five.

Key Matches

Juan Manuel Cerundolo def. Jannik Sinner (1) 3-6 2-6 7-5 6-1 6-1
In the biggest shock of the tournament, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner suffered a stunning five-set defeat to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
Sinner cruised through the first two sets and led 5-1 in the third, but suddenly hit a physical wall, suffering from dizziness, low energy, and cramps.
He failed to serve out the match twice and never recovered. Cerundolo stormed back to win 18 of the final 20 games and complete one of the most dramatic upsets in recent Roland Garros history.
This ends Sinner’s 30-match winning streak and his bid for the Career Grand Slam in 2026. Cerundolo advances to the third round for the first time at a major.
While there were talks of Sinner maybe struggling on clay over five sets, I wasn’t really sure who could really compete with him to make it physical.
The first two sets were lopsided in terms of score, but Cerundolo did keep Sinner out there for nearly 2 hours before things went pear-shaped, and he took full advantage.
Moïse Kouamé def. Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3 7-5 3-6 2-6 7-6(8)
17-year-old French wild card Moïse Kouamé delivered another home fan-pleasing performance, outlasting Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in a five-setter lasting nearly five hours.
Kouamé showed incredible fighting spirit and crowd-pleasing shotmaking, saving crucial break points in the decider to win a marathon tie-break. The teenager became the youngest player to reach the third round of a major since Rafael Nadal in 2003.
I’m not buying into the French media hype about him, though. Vallejo is hardly a feared opponent, and I would expect Tabilo to defeat him handily in the next round.
Frances Tiafoe def. Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-4 6-7(1) 6-4
No. 19 seed Frances Tiafoe edged Hubert Hurkacz in a high-quality five-set battle. Tiafoe showed great resilience and variety, prevailing in a match filled with momentum swings.
While Hurkacz isn’t the scalp he once was, he still serves huge, and Tiafoe isn’t exactly pulling up any trees himself, so this is a strong result for the American on clay.
Felix Auger-Aliassime def. Román Andrés Burruchaga 4-6 6-0 7-5 6-1
No. 4 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime survived an early scare, losing the first set before producing a dominant response.
He raced through the next three sets with aggressive baseline play to reach the third round comfortably after the slow start, and his draw is soft.
Learner Tien def. Facundo Díaz Acosta 7-5 4-6 3-6 7-6(4) 6-3
18th seed Learner Tien battled through a tough five-setter to advance. Fresh off his Geneva title, he showed good fighting qualities and has a very reliable game, winning the pressure moments, with just three points separating the two over the course of 4 hours.
Raphael Collignon def. Ben Shelton 6-4 7-5 6-4
Raphael Collignon pulled off a major upset, defeating No. 5 seed Ben Shelton in straight sets to reach the third round of Roland Garros.
The 24-year-old Belgian produced a highly impressive performance, blasting 30 winners while keeping unforced errors low at just 13.
He dictated play with powerful, aggressive baseline hitting and never let Shelton find his rhythm on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
This marks Collignon’s first career Top-5 victory and continues the wave of big upsets at this year’s tournament
The Belgian, who arrived in strong form with a Challenger final under his belt, has picked up some decent results this year. Along with Blockx, the Belgians have got quite a duo, and they’re already outperforming the much-promoted Zizou Bergs.
