Jonas Vingegaard rode to victory on the final mountain stage of the Giro d’ltalia on Stage 20, attacking on the final ascent of Piancavallo (14.5km at 7.8%). The Dane went clear 11km from the summit and won minute 15 seconds over his rivals.
When Vingegaard attacked he briefly drew Felix Gall with him, then dropped his closest overall rival and swept past the remnants of the breakaway. Behind the maglia rosa, the fight for the podium briefly opened before settling again inside the final kilometres. Gall, Hindley, Gee-West, Bernal and Arensman regrouped behind, leaving the top five on course to remain unchanged.
The final climb left the same image that has defined this Giro: the Maglia rosa alone at the front, and everyone else fighting over what remained.
“I’m a cyclist I like to win I want to win as many races as possible. So, we decided to go for it again today.”
-Jonas Vingegaard
