‘You can count on him’

Phil Housley praises Maple Leafs defenceman Jake McCabe: ‘You can count on him’

They are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished last in the Atlantic Division, but there is optimism around the organization that a better year can happen in 2026-27 due to the current stars on the roster, and the fact that they hold the number one selection at the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

On Friday, former NHL defenceman, head coach and Hockey Hall of Fame member Phil Housley joined Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill to discuss what having the first overall pick does for the organization, the media presence that Toronto can bring, and how he views his former player, Jake McCabe.

“Obviously, you are going to get a great player. We all pretty much know who that is going to be, but it’s really exciting. To add a piece like that to your team, that’s going to help immensely right away,” Housley said. “Whoever’s getting that call, I’m sure is excited about that, and moving forward, Toronto, that’s going to be huge.”

Oftentimes, the media presence and pressure that the market of Toronto brings can be seen as greater than any other spot in the NHL. This can be talked about negatively, but Housley stated that this factor can sometimes lead to a greater drive to succeed.

“That’s part of the game. Even coaching in Buffalo, you could see there were a lot of reporters after every practice. It wouldn’t be your typical five or six guys, you’d walk into a room, and there would be 25 reporters there,” Housley said. “You had to be mindful of what you said because they can take it out of context and use it against you, so that was really tough. As a coach or player, you have to find a way to play to your potential, and obviously, the media can get down on you, but I think it’s a good thing too, knowing they can motivate you to play better, and knowing you have to answer the bell. When you’re winning in a big market, there’s nothing better.”

As the Maple Leafs struggled to a 32-36-14 record, it felt like there were often nights and stretches where it was hard to pick out a bright spot on their roster. One player who put together a strong season was McCabe, not only for his production but his willingness to lay his body on the line for his team.

McCabe appeared in 80 games this past season and recorded five goals and 20 assists, only three points off his career high of 28 set during the 2023-24 campaign. The 32-year-old finished with a plus-three rating and totalled 190 blocked shots, the most in the NHL. Housley coached McCabe for two seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, as well as at the 2013 World Junior Championships, where they captured gold with the USA.

“I think of his courage and the fearless way he plays this game. You can count on him; he blocks shots, and you always have to keep your head up when Jake’s on the ice because he can hit hard,” Housley said. “I just like his steadiness. Coaching him at the 2013 World Juniors when we won a gold medal, and then in Buffalo, and just seeing how he’s evolved and developed his game. He’s a tremendous person, really cares about winning, and is a great teammate, so I always wish him the best.”
