This edition (May 31, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three storylines about hockey’s offseason drama heating up. The Oilers are stuck trying to fix a shaky blue line with almost no cap space to work with. The Canadiens failed to trade Patrik Laine at the deadline, so he’s probably walking in July. And the Maple Leafs say they are open to offers for the No. 1 pick, but would only deal it for a true game-changer like Zach Werenski. So expect plenty of rumour mill noise even if big moves are unlikely.
Oilers’ Blue-Line Puzzle: Good Options, No Easy Way to Pay for Them
Edmonton’s stuck in that annoying contender trap: they need defensive upgrades but have almost no cap wiggle room or trade chips left. St-Pierre’s picks are Trouba for grit, Andersson as the perfect right-shot upgrade, or Raddysh as the affordable workhorse. All these make sense on paper, but each comes with a money problem.
The real headache is clearing salary to make any of it happen; names like Nurse or Ekholm would likely need to move, and neither is exactly eager to waive protections. Bottom line: the Oilers can find fits. However, figuring out how to pay for them without gutting the core is the offseason’s big puzzle.

Canadiens Laine Almost Traded — Now He’s Likely Gone
Montreal tried to move Patrik Laine at the deadline to snag a defender. But the deals on the table didn’t cut it, and the trade fizzled. So Laine’s probably not coming back next year. Names like Ristolainen, Siegenthaler, and Carlo were floated as fits, but teams balked at the price Montreal wanted.
Now he’s likely walking on July 1. Laine’s a sniper and power-play specialist, but injuries and limited playoff use raise questions. He might get a short-term gamble from a team that needs goals, but don’t count on a big long-term payday.

Would the Maple Leafs Trade No. 1 for Werenski? Probably Not; But It’s Tempting
The Maple Leafs say they’re open to offers for the No. 1 pick, but you’d need to slap them with something jaw-dropping to make them part with it. Trading that spot only happens once in a blue moon. Jesse Blake floated a wild swap: Zach Werenski plus the 14th pick. Werenski’s a point-per-game blueliner who’d instantly transform Toronto’s blue line, but you’d be passing on a player who could become a franchise cornerstone for the next decade.
Realistically, Toronto’s sticking unless a superstar or massive haul shows up. Werenski is exactly the kind of player worth giving serious thought to, though. He’d pair perfectly with Matthews and company if the Maple Leafs think they’re one big piece away from a Cup run.
