Amid a Toronto Blue Jays season marked by injury trouble, Jesus Sanchez suffered the most bizarre of them all earlier today.
“Not ideal. First time I’ve seen that. Balls shouldn’t be coming into the field of play,” Schneider added.
The 28-year-old outfielder was removed from the game with a right wrist contusion, with Yohnedrick Pinango taking his spot in the lineup. Sanchez underwent X-rays that came back negative for a fracture.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider says Jesus Sanchez told him he was having a “playful” back & forth with a 12-year-old fan & motioned to the fan “almost like, ‘hey, let’s have a catch.’
And I think the kid took it literally and hit Sanch with the ball.”
“It was a misunderstanding,” Sanchez said to reporters through an interpreter. “I wasn’t trying to play catch right there with them. I just looked at them, and they thought maybe that I wanted them to throw the ball back to me.”
The fan was ejected from the game.
“I’m sure the kid feels bad. I’m assuming there’s no ill intent there. But yeah, just balls coming on the field during the inning is something that shouldn’t happen,” Schneider said.
