Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has expressed confidence in Ghana’s prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team has the quality to “surprise people” at the tournament in North America. Speaking ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, Ayew said the squad is focused on delivering strong performances as part of their build-up to the global showpiece. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:45 GMT. The fixture will also mark the first test for new head coach Carlos Queiroz, as the team continues its preparations for the tournament. “We just want to go there and put on a show and represent Africa and Ghana the best that we can,” the 35-year-old said. “I’m confident that with the manager’s ideas and the boys’ commitment, I’m sure we will surprise people,” he added. Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and are seeking a stronger run after exiting at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022. The Black Stars last progressed beyond the group phase in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals. The team will conclude their pre-tournament preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before shifting full attention to the World Cup. At the tournament, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, face England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and complete their group matches against Croatia on June 27.
