Kansas City Royals vs Cincinnati Reds – June 1, 2026

After dropping the first two games to Atlanta in the weekend series the Reds came back on Sunday to pick up a win and avoid being swept. Tonight they’ll welcome the Kansas City Royals to Cincinnati with a bit of a depleted team. Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Chase Burns was scratched from his start with an illness. More on that below in the news and notes section.

Starting Pitchers

Lyon Richardson

A former starter, Richardson made the move to the bullpen in 2025. He has thrown multiple innings with Triple-A Louisville this season, but this is an emergency spot start and he shouldn’t be expected to throw much given that he picked two days ago. As such, we’re not going to both getting into his splits because almost all of them are from Triple-A and won’t be too useful today anyways.

Luinder Avila

This is only going to be the second start of the season for Avila. He’s pitched out of the bullpen for the Royals this year and has pitched multiple innings in all but two of his 11 games. He hasn’t pitched more than 3.0 innings this season in any outing, but did pitch into the 4th inning in his only start. His lone start was a rough one as the Brewers scored five runs on eight hits and three walks against him in 3.0 innings. Over the next eight games he had a 2.35 ERA, but in his last outing he gave up seven hits and two walks to the Yankees as they scored three runs in 3.0 innings against him.

This season left-handed hitters have been very successful against Avila. They hit for a high average, walk plenty, and have shown solid power. Right-handed hitters are doing similar things, but with a high but not as high average.

News and Notes

Chase Burns is out

He was scheduled to start tonight’s game but he is sick. He had a fever and just wasn’t feeling well. Mark Sheldon of Reds.com reports that if Burns feels better on Tuesday that he will likely start the game on Wednesday.

Edwin Arroyo called up on a day full of roster moves

If you read the lineup above you already know that Edwin Arroyo was called up. This will be his MLB debut. He’s up because Elly De La Cruz is now on the injured list. The Reds also called up left-handed pitcher Brandon Leibrandt and designated Yunior Marte for assignment. You can read all about the moves with plenty more details here.

A grand slam in his pro debut

In January the Reds paid outfielder Angel Nunez $3,000,000 for a signing bonus. Today the Dominican Summer League season began and the 17-year-old hit a grand slam in his pro debut. He later added a double in the game. For you sickos, you can watch the grand slam over at RedsMinorLeagues.com.
