‘I’m proud to call Newcastle home’ Fabian Schar gets emotional after extending stay to 9 years

On Tuesday we saw Newcastle United announce that Fabian Schar had signed a new contract.

The Swiss defender agreeing a new one year deal to take him up to 30 June 2027.

Newcastle United adopting this approach in recent years, asking the more mature players to add one more season at a time.

Fabian Schar did the same back in April 2025, agreeing a new one year extension for the 2025/26 season just ended.

A big relief to both Eddie Howe and the Newcastle United fans, great news to hear the classy defender is staying on for the huge challenge of this 2026/27 season that lies ahead.

Fabian Schar having this to say after the new contract was announced: “I’m really pleased to be staying at the club. I feel like I’ve achieved a lot in my eight years here but I believe there is still much more to come. I’m proud to call Newcastle home. Everybody knows how happy I am, both in this city and with this club, so I’m very glad to be continuing that for another year. Last season didn’t end the way I wanted in terms of my injury but my full focus now is on getting back to fitness and helping the team achieve our goals next season.”

Fabian Schar has been a key player following the Newcastle United takeover in October 2021, restored to the team as a regular starter by Eddie Howe after Steve Bruce had woefully underused him.

Eddie Howe having the now 33 year as first choice throughout these years, including this most recent season when Newcastle won the League Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

Interesting to look back at an interview Fabian Schar did with Swiss media exactly a year ago in June 2025, following a season when Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League once again, plus won a first trophy in 56 years.

Fabian Schar talking to NZZ – 5 June 2025:

“The cup win was incredible. I will never forget it. Everyone knew that the end of Newcastle’s trophy drought would be celebrated. But when it actually happened and I saw it for myself, it was a completely different experience. I let the moment sink in and realised that this isn’t an everyday occurrence. Experiencing this joy was very meaningful to me. I have been at Newcastle United since 2018 and feel an enormous connection to the city and the club. I wanted to give something back to everyone. That is why the relief after the final whistle in the game against Liverpool was so immense.”

Fabian Schar had this to say about Eddie Howe (pictured above with the Swiss defender) a year ago:

“It is extremely important that I feel the manager’s affection and that I enjoy his trust. I felt that 100 per cent with Eddie Howe from day one. It has made me a better player over the past few years.  He knows me very well, both as a player and as a person. He knows what I can offer a team. He makes that possible. The manager [Eddie Howe] understands how to incorporate the individual strengths of each player into our game. For me, that is [also] opening up the game, which he encourages. If I never scored a goal, he would tell me to stop. I have always been a dangerous player in front of goal. The attacking mindset is part of my game. I am more likely to look for a finish than a cross.”

Fabian Schar also added this a year ago:

“When I extended my contract [in April 2025], I couldn’t imagine another club. I am a player who appreciates what I have. I would like to play football for another two or three years and so I am not thinking about retiring just yet.”
