For example, steak and sweet potato are a commonly enjoyed dish. Carbohydrates: A necessity for proper hockey & nutrition

In order to fuel their top-level performances on the ice, hockey players must consume foods that are high in energy. Complex carbohydrates are vitally important here, with rice dishes and sweet potato creations a preference for many elite athletes. Also, whole-grain pasta or brown rice (along with lean meat or fish) and vegetables are loaded with complex carbs, which help athletes feel sustained and ready for battle on the ice. 

Simple carb snacks are also a preference 

Whether it is in the locker room while getting a much-needed rub down or driving to the arena ahead of a practice, many hockey players top up their carbohydrate intake with a few carb-heavy snacks. You’ve undoubtedly seen professional athletes consume bananas; dried fruit is another choice for many pros, while many have also been known to sip on sports drinks to fuel their bodies before the action gets underway. 

Healthy fats are always on the menu 

In the morning, healthy fats are a good way to start the day. Many athletes begin with avocado on sourdough toast, for example. In terms of avocado, it’s packed with slow-burning energy, while benefits like muscle recovery are also associated with healthy fats of this type. Other foods in this category include nuts, flax seeds, and coconut oil. 

Hydration is key 

Finally, hydration is another key part of the elite athlete’s dietary requirements. Along with munching on the good stuff, drinking enough water is a necessity. On game day, many hockey players can consume up to four liters of it. Coconut water, protein powders, and electrolytes are also excellent ways to keep hydrated.
