June 3, 2026 — A lot can happen in five days

I’ve tried to restrain myself from doing a lot of reporting on the women’s lacrosse transfer portal, since a lot of this kind of reporting is somewhat difficult without direct access to facts.

Usually, you only get the true information about what is going on in the sport only after a social media post showing a player, two collegiate logos, and an arrow going from one to another.

But thankfully, there are just five more days before the transfer portal closes. Reports have indicated that there may be anywhere from 475 to 500 players across all three divisions who have made their intention to move somewhere else.

Five days from now, however, the game of musical chairs stops.

And those who find themselves without a team are likely never going to pick up a stick again, if you go by some of the metrics in other athletic competitions.

We made note, earlier this year, that about half of the student-athletes in Division I men’s basketball, one of the two most lucrative college competitions run by the NCAA, entered the portal. We hoped, at that time, that this same kind of insanity would not spread to other sports.

I guess I might be wrong.
