2026 FIFA World Cup Group E Preview

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is less than two weeks away, and the 12 groups are set ahead of the newly expanded 48-team tournament.

The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marks the first time the historic tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams. It will also feature a new Round of 32 knockout stage, resulting in a colossal 104 matches across 39 days.

Group E includes Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador. Let’s take a look at the Group E teams and see how each team is shaping up heading into the tournament.

Group E: Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador

Germany:

Germany, the 2014 World Cup champions, enter the 2026 tournament looking to reestablish themselves as one of the top international teams in the world after back-to-back World Cups in which they failed to advance from the group stage. Germany fielded talented rosters in both 2018 and 2022 but struggled heavily under the bright lights, leading many to question whether the nation could still compete among the world’s elite.

Going into this summer, Germany is led by manager Julian Nagelsmann, who is tasked with guiding a new generation of talented players such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Lennart Karl, and more. Germany also has a strong mix of experienced players returning to the biggest international stage, including Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rüdiger, who are set to play in their third World Cup, as well as goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is returning for his fifth.

Germany’s problem has never been a lack of talent, but they will need to prove they can turn that talent into results on the world’s biggest stage.

Curacao:

Curacao will be making history this summer as the smallest country by population to ever participate in a World Cup. While new ground will be broken by Curacao this summer, their first test on the big stage won’t be an easy one, as they will face four-time World Cup winners Germany in Houston in their opening group stage match.

With all three World Cup hosts not participating in CONCACAF qualifying, Curacao stepped up and performed extremely well, going undefeated with seven wins and three draws.

Ivory Coast:

Ivory Coast is making its return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014. They have never made it out of the group stage in any of their previous three tournaments (2006, 2010, 2014), but their new generation and optimistic chances in an open Group E could put Ivory Coast in a position to make history.

Franck Kessié will anchor the Ivory Coast midfield and will be joined by a talented group of attackers such as Villarreal’s Nicolas Pépé, Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and promising 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who scored 12 goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig and could be in line for a big summer transfer if he brings his recent club form to the international stage.

Ecuador:

Ecuador are back for their fifth World Cup appearance and are coming off a lackluster 2022 tournament in Qatar where they were eliminated in the group stage. Ecuador had a strong showing in World Cup qualifying, going 8-2-8 en route to a second-place finish in CONMEBOL qualifying.

Ecuador is led by its elite defensive unit, anchored by some of the world’s top defensive talent in Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo and Paris Saint-Germain’s Willian Pacho. Ecuador only conceded five goals in their 18 qualification matches and will bring that near-impenetrable defense to the U.S. this summer, aiming to make scoring incredibly difficult for their Group E opponents.
