Newmen launches gravel wheels with 62mm depth, 45mm external width and claimed best in class aerodynamics

Newmen, the sister component brand to Cube bikes, has launched the Streem G.62 gravel wheelset with a 62mm depth, 45mm outer width and 27mm internal width.

The brand says that the wheels’ outsize dimensions hit the sweet spot for the 45mm to 50mm gravel tyres that are rapidly becoming the go-to width, if your gravel bike has space for them.

Gravel wheels are trending ever-deeper and wider. Just last month, Enve announced the G SES 6.7 Pro with 60mm front/67mm rear depths, an even greater 35mm internal width and aero tuned for 44mm to 52mm gravel tyres.

Roval got in on the act in March, launching the Terra Aero CLX with mixed 50mm front and 45mm rear depths and a claimed 1,340g weight and the same 27mm internal width as Newmen’s new wheels. 32-inch aero gravel wheels are also bubbling under, with Scott revealing its prototype 32-inch bike fitted with Industry Nine prototype wheels just ahead of Unbound.

Despite their dimensions, Newmen claims that the Streem G.62 wheels have a 1,530g per set weight, in part thanks to being built with 21 Vonoa carbon spokes per wheel. There’s an alternative built with 24 Sapim CX Ray steel spokes, which increases the claimed weight to 1,600g.

According to Newmen, the Streem G.62 wheels match the performance of the best aero road wheels in its wind-tunnel testing, even when fitted with 50mm tyres. It says that optimum aerodynamics requires that the tyre not be wider than the rim, hence the ultra-wide 45mm rim profile.

At the same time, the brand claims that the rim’s internal width mustn’t be too great to keep the actual tyre width in check. It claims that the 27mm internal width hooked rim chosen ensures that there’s good lateral support for a gravel tyre run at low pressure, while allowing the tyre sidewalls to flex. Any wider and Newmen says that the sidewalls are too straight and flex less and so the ride is less comfortable.

The wheels are compatible with Newmen’s Aero Valve System, which it also uses in its road wheels and which hides the valve within the rim, improving aerodynamics.

Ridden 2,700km across Patagonia

Newmen also says that the rim profile ensures that, despite their depth, the Streem G.62 wheels handle well, even in crosswinds and that this was borne out on the 2,700km Final Frontier gravel event in Patagonia, a notably windy part of the world.

The wheels turn on Newmen’s own three-pawl Fade R hubs, which can handle electric motors with up to 60Nm torque. There are Shimano HG and SRAM XDR freehub options.

The Newmen Streem G.62 gravel wheelset is priced at €1,690 (approx £1,460) with carbon spokes or €1,390 (approx £1,200) with steel spokes. You can choose between silver and black decals for the carbon spoked wheels, while the steel spoked wheels come with black decals only. Newmen says that the wheels will be available to buy from August.
