Some Baseball Related Things at Hiroshima – Dutch Baseball Hangout

Today was a travel day from Kyoto to Hiroshima. After two-and-a-half-hours we arrived at Hiroshima Station. There I saw something amazing that put a big smile on my face.

When we checked out at the Shinkansen gate, I saw one person with a Hiroshima Toyo Carp jersey. I thought: “Nice.” Little did I know what I was about to see.

My wife and I were in desperate need of caffeine and a snack, so we entered the Starbucks at Hiroshima Station. After we picked up our order and sat down, I started to notice all kinds of people wearing baseball jerseys of both the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and the Orix Buffaloes. The station hall was packed with baseball fans who shared the space peacefully.

When we left Kyoto this morning, I wasn’t aware that my favorite team, the Orix Buffaloes, played in Hiroshima today.

It was very nice to see these baseball fans next to each other without dissatisfaction. I took the plunge and asked two baseball fans in my best Japanese (which is limited to Sumimasen, Arigato, Arigato Gozaimas, and very basic stuf like that) if they allowed me to take a picture of them. Luckily they agreed.

This put a big smile on my face.

We spent about an hour in the lobby of the hotel and the food market at Hiroshima Station, and especially the food market was also packed with baseball fans of both sides. After we arrived at our room we had a beautiful view at the city and the Mazda Zoom Zoom Stadium, home of the Carp, which is an 18 minute walk from our hotel.

Before I forget, when waiting at the check in desk, I noticed these two guys. Also some employees of the food stands at the food market were wearing red Carp jerseys as well. It is clear that the fans are very proud of their teams.

Even if I could not attend the game as it was sold out, these are the little things that make me love the game so much.
