The Edmonton Oilers’ coaching search has taken a dramatic turn.
According to multiple reports, the organization is seriously considering Mike Babcock as its next head coach. TSN insiders Darren Dreger and Ryan Rishaug have both reported developments surrounding the situation, while additional reports indicate Oilers owner Daryl Katz has already spoken directly with Babcock and members of Edmonton’s leadership group.
While no decision has been finalized, this is no longer just speculation. The Oilers are actively exploring the possibility.
NHLPA Consultation Shows Oilers Are Being Thorough
One of the biggest hurdles surrounding a potential Babcock hire stems from the controversy that ended his tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets before the 2023-24 season.
Babcock resigned after allegations surfaced that he had improperly asked players to show him personal photos on their phones. The incident sparked backlash throughout the hockey world and led to the NHL Players’ Association becoming heavily involved.
Because of that history, Dreger reported that Edmonton has already consulted with the NHLPA to determine whether there would be objections should the club move forward with hiring Babcock. At this stage, the NHLPA has declined public comment, and reports indicate the NHL itself could conduct further review if necessary.
The Oilers clearly understand that this is not a standard coaching hire. Any move involving Babcock must be handled carefully and transparently.
Babcock Has Already Met With Daryl Katz
Reports indicate Babcock has spoken directly with owner Daryl Katz, who ultimately holds final authority over the decision. However, this is not believed to be a situation where ownership alone will dictate the outcome. Edmonton’s core players have significant influence within the organization, and according to reports, the leadership group has either met with or spoken to Babcock already.
Whatever was discussed appears to have eased concerns internally. Rishaug reported that the leadership group is firmly behind the organization exploring this path and that the urgency to finally capture a Stanley Cup outweighs the negative publicity that may accompany the hire.
That development may be the most significant piece of the story. If Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the veteran leaders had pushed back, it is difficult to imagine the process advancing this far.
The Benefits of Hiring Mike Babcock
From a purely hockey standpoint, there are several reasons why the Oilers would consider bringing Babcock behind the bench. First and foremost is his championship pedigree. Babcock won a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008 and has enjoyed success at every level, including two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada. Very few available coaches possess that kind of experience.
Another major selling point is the structure and accountability he is known for demanding. Edmonton has often relied heavily on its elite offensive talent to overcome mistakes, but Babcock’s systems have traditionally emphasized defensive responsibility and consistency. Those qualities could help round out a roster that has occasionally struggled to play a complete game.
Babcock has also spent much of his career coaching superstar players. From Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg in Detroit to Sidney Crosby and numerous Team Canada stars, he has experience managing elite talent and the expectations that come with contending for championships. His resume alone would bring instant credibility to the Oilers’ bench and send a message that the organization is fully committed to winning now.
The Risks That Come With the Hire
At the same time, hiring Babcock would come with significant risks. The biggest concern is the public relations fallout that would inevitably follow. His departure from Columbus in 2023 remains fresh in the minds of many around the league, and the Oilers would face immediate scrutiny from fans, media and the broader hockey community.
There are also questions surrounding player relationships. Several former players have publicly criticized Babcock’s coaching methods over the years, and there is uncertainty about whether his demanding style can be as effective in today’s NHL as it was earlier in his career. Modern players often respond differently than previous generations, making communication and trust more important than ever.
Perhaps the biggest concern is the potential for distractions. A team with Stanley Cup aspirations needs complete focus, and any controversy surrounding the head coach could quickly become a daily storyline. Because of Babcock’s history, there would be virtually no margin for error. If the Oilers were to struggle out of the gate, criticism surrounding the hire would intensify rapidly, placing even more pressure on a team already operating with championship expectations.
Edmonton Has to Get This Right
The Oilers are entering what could be the most important stretch in franchise history. With McDavid’s future continuing to be one of the biggest storylines in hockey, Edmonton cannot afford to make the wrong decision with its next head coach. The pressure to capitalize on the team’s Stanley Cup window has never been greater.

If the organization ultimately decides to hire Babcock, it cannot simply be based on his impressive resume and past accomplishments. The Oilers must be completely confident that their core players and leadership group genuinely support the move and believe he is the right person to lead them forward.
Just as importantly, Edmonton needs to be convinced that Babcock has learned from the events that led to his departure from Columbus in 2023 and that he can successfully adapt to today’s NHL environment. Creating a healthy, productive culture inside the dressing room has to remain a priority, especially for a team with championship aspirations.
Above all else, the Oilers have to ensure the focus remains on winning hockey games rather than dealing with unnecessary controversy. Before any contract is signed, the organization must have clear answers to those questions. With so much at stake, this is a decision they simply cannot afford to get wrong.
A Holding Pattern for Now
As things stand, the interest is real, but obstacles remain.
The Oilers have done extensive homework by speaking with the NHLPA, engaging ownership and consulting with their leadership group. Internally, there appears to be no immediate rejection from the players who matter most.
Still, approval from within the dressing room does not automatically guarantee approval from the rest of the hockey world. This is one of the most unique coaching searches Edmonton has ever conducted.
Babcock’s resume makes him an intriguing candidate. His history makes him a controversial one. Now the Oilers must decide whether the pursuit of a Stanley Cup is worth the risks that come with bringing one of hockey’s most polarizing figures back behind an NHL bench.
